Hi all, looking for advice....

Hello forum!

New here, first post and all that.... please be gentile....

Had a couple of beers and got on craigslist.org....

Couple of bucks later, it's got a new home....

Couple of months later.....

It finally got into my garage.

The fuel tank is a mess, rusted out. Got a good fuel tank for the bike, with out a petcock. So that's my first point of focus. I want to get fuel to the carburetors and see if the bike has any life.

It's got 5500 miles, so it can't be too hurt.. other than the fact that it looks like junk.

Any help/advice is appreciated...

Randy

Well, first bit of advice is to avoid going on Craigslist while drunk.

Get hold of a factory maintenance manual. Just go buy one... it's money well spent.

Drain and flush all fluids -- fuel, coolant, brake, and of course blinker.

Assume the carbs will need a good cleaning at minimum if not a rebuild.

Assume that the battery is toast.

Examine all rubber parts for cracking and hardening. That includes tires.

Check the power bands.

i would not even mess with the carbs as is. take em off and clean/rebuild them. as long as you dont drink and browse the personal section of craigslist, you should be fine. lol

Hi all, thanks for the replies and advice!

So what is the story on the gas tanks on these bikes? It's my understanding they can be a problem. I dumped 2 1/2 gallons of rusted fuel & water out of the bike's gas tank. Just curious as I have a rust free gas tank and want to take care of it properly.

I'm going to try rigging up a temporary gas tank to see if I can get the engine started before doing anything else. I already have a phone call to someone local who is a mikuni expert, planning to have the carbs rebuilt. That is pretty much a no brainer after what I got out of the tank. I just want to hear the engine run before investing anything more into the bike.

Oh, is there someplace I can post a WIP type of thread to document the work I do to this bike? I'm not even sure what direction I will be going with this bike...

Thanks
Randy

DEFINITELY do a restoration thread! Stuff like that is super valuable and one of the best things about the forum.

It should go in the 1987-2007 Tech Talk subforum
