Okay... something I should know but what's the fuel capacity for each of the different "gens".
Old = ?.?
New = 4.8 (personally verified by running it bone dry)
300 = 4.5???

I thought that the old gen had a smaller tank but I googled and got specs that were identical to a new gen.

If you want something to shoot for, Alan Smith went 405 miles on a tank on our ride home from the Las Vegas to Barstow Vetter Fuel Economy Challenge. He went from Barstow CA to Castro Valley CA . The ride was mostly on freeways ( Hwy 58 to I-5 to Hwy580 ) running 70 to 80 mph.

Sweet! That's better than 84mpg if he went bone dry.

Obviously not a stock 250, so let us know what mods he'd made and shoot us a picture.
Sprockets
carb mods
aero dynamics
etc.

Mine needs reserve at about 220 or so. Can't say I've risked testing the limits of that, though. xP
I'm sure it would be ~250 total.

Now that I have 4 fill ups since the new gearing, the bike seems to be settling in at around 70 mpg average fill up. I normally fill up around 280 with about 4 gals used. When my fuel gage goes just below the red line I'm right at 4 gals.

I haven't seen the 80 mpg since the first fill after the gear change, but I've only been going back and forth to work. I'll have to try the trip to my mom's house again and see if that 80 mpg was a fluke.

Changing to 15T/41T, now I'll get that 7th gear, lol.

Chris, Alan's bike is 2005 pregen with the full Vetter streamlining package. He uses stock carb jetting and he has raised the gearing with a 15T countershaft sprocket and a 33T rear sprocket

I really do like this gearing and I don't find my self hunting for that "7th" gear anymore.

I bought my Ninja because I felt it was the best all around package for me... good mpg, good looks, low price, and decent on the freeway. I love reading about what Vic is doing for the Vetter Challenge, but I didn't want to change the looks of my bike too much. The only "improvements" I made for mpg were to add a touring windshield, change the gearing, and learn to use hypermiling techniques.

Interestingly I've made the same changes save the rear, only went down one tooth there. Hadn't tought about the increased fuel economy with the sport touring windsheild but it stand to reason. Just installed it so I can't comment on the improvement. Best effort on fuel economy has been 76mpg. Normally in the mid 60s but pulling the clutch in while riding the Blueridge Parkway allowed a good result. I've gotten 70+ three times now and really enjoy chastizing my Prius friends about how "ungreen" they really are...

Too funny! I sooo love ribbing my friends about that too. One of them got into a van pool and I was doing the numbers with him just for fun. I'm commuting cheaper than him, lol.

My 300 has a +1 CS, didn't make a MPG difference and I xdid it for better useability of 1st gear. It has hit the reserve warning light at 186 miles with regularity, leaving .9 gallon in the tank. I've been to around 220 but don't want to starve the pump.

I did a new personal best of 437.3 miles on my last fillup for my streamliner. I needed 3.79 gallons to top it off for 115.3 mpg.

190. Sounds like I can probably push it a little more if I want, but I don't want!

I just filled up on my way home from work today... getting about the same as most folks.. went 223 miles, and filled up with 3.8 gals, getting a little over 58 mpg.

My 2fiddy is all stock, and my commute is all city street, I'm really conservative on the throttle, and on the shifting.

Looks like the best I've ever done was 247.6 miles and filled up to 3.65 miles.

However, I've discovered that the variety of riding I do and the road types and speeds I cover, I'm safe at 200 miles. I tend to average around 52 MPG over the course of time so that allows me to fill up with some emergency fuel left over just in case.
