Windshields

Hey everyone with the 1st-gen ninjettes! I'm looking into aftermarket windshields because the stock one almost might as well not be there. I'm looking for some decent wind protection without killing the sporty look of the bike, as some of the tall touring shields do. I like to ride in a tuck, and am also kind of looking for clip-ons too. I actually find the forward position more comfortable than the normal sitting position.

I am looking at Mike'sShields (http://members.cox.net/michealmims/mikesshields.htm) because they look nice and are cheaper than the big name ones. I like the euro sport model, but I'm wondering if anyone else has either experience with this model, or other models to suggest. The double bubble would be nice, but I'm a little on the cheap side, being a student with limited money.

Nope I haven't changed the wind screen. Been tempted to but I just haven't. I heard the double bubble ones were good but I couldn't tell you. So I guess I am interested to know too!

I have Mike's euro sport I believe. It was a huge pain in the arse to put on, because the bolt holes DID NOT line up correctly. It is an improvement over the stock one for sure, but It wasn't worth the 65 bucks for me in the long run. It's a flat piece of plexi or lexan (can't remember) that you bend as you put it on. It also flops a bit at highway speeds...kind of needs a brace. I am warmer overall, but as far as wind noise, it has just moved up to my helmet. At a full tuck, it's silent. BTW I'm about 5'11".

I'm not trying to bash Mike's product, and I understand that it's a side gig, but it just wasn't worth it to ME. I have no experience with the Doubble Bubble.

You say 1st gen (1986-87), but you're asking about a shield for a 2004, that's 2nd gen. Anyhow, I've got one of mike's shields, it's his big sport shield. I'd like to get the euro shield as I think it looks better & more like the double bubble that I had previous to buying mike's shield. I only replaced it because it was damaged when my bike fell over on the front porch ;-( .
The euro shield should be almost as protective as the big sport shield. One thing the euro shield lacks that the sport shield has is protection for the hands. You have to buy the wings to get that.

ninjammin-The Euro shield isn't flat so you must have his big sport shield, mine lined perfectly and doesn't move around either. Did you contact him about the problems?

It's actually 3rd or 4th gen, depending on how people classify certain changes over the years. But for the purposes of ninjette.org; the "1st-gen ninjette" here in the US is the pre-2008; and the "2nd gen" is the 2008+.

Yeah, I fully understand that my 04 is NOT an actual 1st gen ninjette, but I do kind of wish it was, as the 1st gens are so much more beautiful, though the most recent gen is up there too.

I was thinking about the euro sport with wings, or a double bubble (maybe with wings). ARG!!!! I still can't decide!!! Even if they only help in the tuck position, I like to ride like 3/4 tuck anyway, full tuck and my backpack starts pushing on my helmet, which is not very nice...

You might want to check out a product known as Laminar. They make an attachment stick on shield that is placed on the top edge of the stock one. It's called the Laminar lip...and it actually works...at speed too!
There are some interesting testimonials on the website too.

Well, I apologize for going MIA, but it's finals week and I had (and still have) several projects to do over the last few weeks and a bunch of tests to study for. I'm also preparing for a build up of my scooter engine into a stroker.

I still haven't decided 100%, but I'll probably end up with a double bubble if I can find a good deal, or the eurosport model from Mike. I think a taller shield would be more comfortable, but I just can't bring myself to kill the looks of the bike that much. Another major reason I haven't got one yet is (of course) money, there's just a few other things that need taken care of before I have the extra for a windshield.

Ok, a month later...I've got a euro model Mike's shield. I'm 5'10" and the wind hits me at the middle of the helmet vs the center of my pecs with the OEM or ZG tinted shield(not double bubble). Still get wind noise due to this, but it is more aero. A light tuck and things do get more quiet. I'm a little worried about the Ms. however, as she'll be riding the bike soon.(just signed up for the rider course) and the top of the euro windscreen cuts presumably into her view. Not a prob for me however. I can see over it just fine, and it's not a bother. Mine fits well enough, not much manipulation getting it on. Doesn't fit quite as precisely as the oem or $89 Zero Gravity screen I had on there, but it works fine.

The Euro sport is not worth it IMO since it's not any taller than OEM, just a bit wider. The Euro however(which is what I have) is since it is 5" taller, but I'll be taking it off and selling it most likely so the wife can see clearly over the smaller screen. I'll add pics in a bit.

Or do you plan to take it to the dealership to get it done?

You really shouldnt need a how to.. you unscrew the screws that hold on the windscreen.. if you dont remove teh fairing, stick a piece of cardboard to hold the 'nuts' on the back.. (learned that from someone on n250.org). If you remove the fairing.. no biggie.. carefully place the new one on.. tighten teh bolts from the inside out and very easy not to crack it.

I just bought a ZG Double Bubble today.... my stocker has a crack in it from a PO.. so might as well upgrade.

removing the fairing makes it easier. I thought it would be more work, but i monkey'd around with it for an hour one time when I took the windscreen off to clean it and tried to get it back on without removing the fairing.

Removing fairing, mounting windscreen should take 1/2 that.

Almost 2 hours later and it's all back together

Grn99Kawi : I didn't try the card board, I couldn't get it under in the right places...

But now my windscreen is back on, and this one isn't cracked!
(I just replaced the old one with a stock one)

OK I am getting a little lost here, with my lack of knowledge and other confusing factors, I am wondering what the stock shield looks like, here's my shield :

Is this a stock shield ? it's obviously my 86 Ninja ... very small and offers little resistance - in other words good luck hiding behind that for protection.

The reason I posted is that mine has a little warp in it and I was looking for options also.

yeah i'll be making sure that he'll be paying for my new bike and medical bills. i'm not one of those people who is sue happy and wants to get a butt load of money for "pain and suffering". after all accidents happen and i don't' want to screw over some poor farmer who's cows got out. but i only think its fair that he or his insurance has to pay the new bike.

I have seen some 2007 250's with what I believe is a winscreen that makes the headlight look better (not so square)....... any one know where I can find something like that. I have been googling all morning!

I've used the OEM, ZG DB, Mike's Euro and Duke's 16" windshield.

The ZG DB does a decent job if you are short, or tuck in a lot. If you want additional bug/rain protection, then Mike's or Duke's are the way to go.

The biggest difference between the two is how they are mounted. Duke's uses the mirror/fairing stay mounts, while Mike's uses only the fairing screen mounts. IMHO, using the mirror mounts is a better choice due to the additional wind resistance that these mirrors make.

Of course, wind screens are somewhat subjective, as each person has varying needs/desires out of their screen.
