Is this a mechanical turn signal relay?

2010 Ninja 250r in Canada. Recently bought this bike. PO installed LED turn signals in the front, still has OEM turn signals in back (with incandescent bulbs). I had the back fairings off yesterday and had a look at the turn signal relay. It is marked, "C.L. FLASHER FL249SD". I looked it up on the internet but I could not establish if this is mechanical type relay or an electronic one suitable for LED turn signals. Having only installed LED turn signals on the front, the PO did not have to replace the turn signal relay so I can't be sure if this the original relay or an aftermarket electronic one. I suspect this is a mechanical relay.

I'd like to know for sure in case I decide to replace the rear turn signals with LED's at some point. If the relay is mechanical, I'll have to replace it with an electronic one when I install LED's in the rear.

Does it make a clicking noise when it's working? If so, it's mechanical.

It doesn't make any noise whatsoever

If it's really silent, even with your ear against it, it's not mechanical.

Mechanical one will be 2 wires. Electrical one will be 3 wires.

The number of pins isn't the way to know which type it is.

https://www.amazon.com/2-Pin-Flashin.../dp/B075FBQM33

Do the "put your ear on it" test or pop its plastic cover off and look inside, if it doesn't say on the outside.

Not necessarily. Third leg typically is just inverse of 2nd one. Here's electronic flasher relay that'll work.

Remember you also need 2 isolation diodes to enable proper dash-indicator operation.

Easiest way to tell is to disconnect one of blinkers. Easy enough to unplug rear one with seats removed. Then turn on turn-signal for that side and see if it blinks at double-rate. If so, it's not solid-state for LEDs.

I've seen some mechanical flashers that do what you said, and others that will blink slowly or not at all with lighter than normal load. But I've never seen one that doesn't make at least a little clicking noise.

True, could that one be defective?

OK, so I pulled the fairings off again this morning. Ear to flasher relay, no sound whatsoever. I then disconnected the rear right turn signal (incandescent). Front right turn signal (LED) works fine, same flash rate whether rear turn signal is plugged in or not.

So I have to conclude that the relay is an electronic one. Thanks all for your comments and insight.

You're probably right. In any case, when you change to all LED you'll know if that flasher still works OK.
