I finally did the valve clearance on my 06 Ninja

They were tight all round, measuring less than 2.5 thou on all valves except cylinder 1 exhaust 2, which was a loose 6.
I set them to 6 on exhaust and 5 on inlet. The 9mm deep socket as recommended in the wiki was invaluable. I also took off the radiator and coils as an assembly which made getting to the exhaust side easy.
It started right up, and I was able to take it off choke earlier. I took it for a quick ride and impressions are good - it feels more tractable at lower revs.

Kaw valves are often found tight upon inspection. Good on you for taking the time/effort in correcting them.

Can't tell you how many owners are in full denial on checking/setting valves!

Good for you. I did this a couple of months back on mine, which was well overdue. I've had the engine now for several years (across multiple project-ninjas) and it's been beaten hard for unknown miles. All valves were on the tight side like yours; sure does run better now though!

That deep 9mm is sure a handy one to have for the job

I bought the stupid tool, it was worth it. Im able to start my bike up without the choke on warm days, and that was 6000 miles and 8 years ago

That is awesome! I love how easy it is to do the valves on the pregen engine. Definitely keep up on the clearances at the proper intervals as long as you have this fun bike.

Can you do the valve clearances without the tool or is it needed for access to the screw and locknuts?

you can do it with screwdriver for valve-adjustment and deep socket for locknut.

Special Tool is handy because you can do both at once without having to remove and swap to other. Also lets you hold valve adjustment in place while locking it down. Otherwise, using deep socket by itself tends to spin valve adjustment slightly as you tighten locknut.

Special Tool makes process much more efficient. You can do valve-adjustment in just 1/3-1/2 time compared to separate tools.

Valve Clearances at 5,700miles on a 2004.

A very low mileage 2004 with a verified 5,700 miles. All exhaust valves overtight and all intakes within spec but at the lower end. This is its first valve check. Given the exhaust side all being out of specification a check at 4,000 miles seems a very reasonable proposition.
