lean/rich test

I know this topic has been brought up numerous times before, but for the life of me, I cannot find a thread/post that I could have sworn was in this forum. There was a post regarding how to test your bike if it is running lean or rich, by blocking off the air filter or somthing to that regard. If someone knows where it is, can you please post the link. I've been searching for it since yesterday without any luck.

I think my bike is running a bit rich. The exhaust smells a bit like gas and I think the bike is eating up a bit more gas than usual. I haven't done any performance mods to the bike. I don't think the original owner did either. However, I do recall him mentioning that he never had to use the choke during cold starts.

I've had the bike for about a month and I've put less than 50 miles on it. I don't have much experience in engine management nor do I know another person with the same bike with whom I can compare it to. It's definitely possible it's just me, the fuel gauge is indicating I used up a 1/4 tank on 30 miles.

Thanks in advance

the gas gauge is not accurate. you can tell if its running rich with a plug check. it would have to be running so rich that it didnt run for there to be that noticable of a difference in gas milage.

thanks for the responses.

I have another question in regards to mpg. Would it be likely for my mpg to be less than the high average considering I weigh above 200lbs?
