Squids

So yesterday I decided to give up on squids. I used to always talk **** on people that arnt wearing gear or try and get them to change there mind about gear or whatever. But at this point Ive come to realize there's so reason to try and get people to change there ways because you or I think they are wrong. Just enjoy riding with them or hanging with them, if they crash and get hurt there's nothing you could have done about it, let them deal with it

/end rant

Well, squids don't only hurt themselves, they hurt the people that care about them.

Hey I saved a squids life the other day:

Met a noob on a GSXR who worked for Best Buy while I was there on my bike.
He told me he needed a mechanic and wanted me to listen to his 2006. Long story short I end up telling him never to use his rear brake. Then out of nowhere he says OMG really is that why I can't stop this thing and skid all over the place? I almost died like five times already! I told him no rear brake unless he's on the dirt or oil.

lol
now I'm the Squid Saver

PS squid can mean noobies too not just no gear wearing people. Also, people who do stunts in public are squids. They make sportbikes look bad to the general public and don't be safe about it. Doing wheelies from stoplight to stoplight while cars are present. Not good for our image or anyone's safety or families.

Lol well i mean it to a point. I'll ask what there reason is for not wearing gear, but if they respond "gear is for pussies" Ill let it go. If they want to know about gear ill help them all day long

I just got my friend to buy leather gear the other day, and he now loves it

I'll admit,
I mostly just use my jeans while running errands on the bike or going to a friends house... but I still always have a jacket, back protector, gloves helmet and boots though. ALWAYS.
Stuff saves my ax.

If I'm going out for a group ride or a sporty solo ride I will throw the leather pants on. Or a long ride out to the other end of Los Angeles I will throw the leathers on.

Life's too short to spend it with dumbasses. Especially during a hobby that carries a reasonable amount of inherent risk. Find people who you're comfortable with. If you're comfortable with the clueless, what does that say about you?

Wow someone is stuck up. You cant change everyone, you can try but if they dont want to learn then they dont want to learn. Plain an simple

I'm comfortable where I dont have to judge every person I hang out with and take them for who they are and not who I want them to be

And guess what, if you get hurt because they did something dumb then its your fault, should have had an exit rout or stayed farther away.

No one is perfect and no one will ever be

I'm not stuck up, I'm just not 19. Everyone has to grow up sometime. It just takes some people a little longer.

Slow your roll, Kevin. You've started an inflammatory thread that could not be more wrong. Of course you're going to be called out on it here. Your point of view is contrary to anyone who cares about not only their own safety, but others while motorcycling. You've stated that it no longer matters what people you ride with do in terms of what they wear, how they ride, or anything else.

That isn't enlightened. It's just wrong.

But you'll learn.

The point isnt to say its wrong to wear gear or you should only hang with squids. I'm with KC I have all my gear on but pants most of the time, if im going far or anything but a simple commute I throw on leathers

Theres no reason not to ride with someone just because they dont have a jacket on, thats the point im making

And it's the point that I'm disagreeing with. Trying to share hard-earned knowledge with someone who clearly hasn't learned it themselves isn't a worthless exercise. The live and let live, nothing is ever wrong, attitude isn't an enlightened one. It's a weak one.

If you ride with people who don't care about their own safety, or have simply no idea about how to ride safely, how to prepare themselves or their bikes safely, or any related skill; the rides will be continuously frustrating. More dangerous than they need to be, less fun than they should be, and ultimately a more negative experience for all concerned, including you.

Ok boys, neutral corners. We are all entitled to our own opinions here. Me, I can see the point of both sides. I personally don't like people who ride w/o gear because to me that says "I don't care about my life or anyone else for that matter." But if they are your friends, one of the main concepts of friends is accepting them just as they are warts and all.

So here we have a case of you have friends you like to hang out with because they are your friends. But on the downside they are also not safety conscious the way you are. Hopefully if you stick to your ATGATT guns in regards to yourself it will slowly rub off on them as they mature a little.

That's how I see it. So please boys, let's not fight.

I agree wholly with this. I've had too many negative instances in this regard. I am picky about who I ride with, and if I ride with anyone that I don't know, you can bet that I am going to give them some room until I can figure them out.

No, sorry Mike. It's not always about getting along at all costs. Either in this thread, or with riders who don't "get it" yet. As always, anyone and everyone is free to make their own decisions about almost anything at all. And that includes whatever personal choices they make about their own gear. Doesn't mean that silly choices need to be accepted by others. Or even should be accepted by others.

I'm in the painstaking process of sewing my GSXR jacket zipper to my Dainese leather pants so that I can wear both my Dainese leather jacket and my Rocket jixxer jacket with the same pair of pants using the two different types of zippers.

Serious PITA.
My leather pants will be down for a while. =(

I'll be stitching for a good month.
Customized gear ftw.

I prefer not riding with people who refuse to wear gear. I'll admit I don't have ALL the gear, but I do have MOST. Most squids don't even have SOME of the gear.
Just my .02 cents. I'm not here to argue with anyone.

I don't see how Kevin's decision to not refuse to ride with squids is an intelligent one? It seems his main point is simply focused around gear - he won't shun someone and ignore them simply because they don't ride in protection. Why should you not make any effort to learn from someone or enjoy their company simply because they don't make the same decision as you? He never said he "accepted" their decision; in fact, he clearly thinks it's a bad one. Kevin just acknowledges that he has been ineffective in changing their minds and he wont try forcing his ideas on them.

Thank you, max hit the nail on the head

If someone always drives like a ****stick and has no idea what there doing then I'm not going to be riding with them because they can hurt me. But if they dont want to wear a jacket, so be it

my opinion. If its not your life its not your business. My 2 cents. take it for what its worth.

I tell my buddy he should get a jacket, but I will ride with him regardless... He's a good rider and a good buddy.

To stop talking about why their decisions are poor *is* accepting them. To then think all is well and treat them like any other riding buddy is shortsighted. It has a good chance of ending badly.

If you are riding with them, it is your business. Not because they don't have full responsibility for their own safety. But if you are riding with someone who has a different idea of safety than you, the lowest common denominator rule is plainly in effect. If they don't take gear seriously, there is a huge likelihood that they aren't getting the point on everything else that goes along with that.

This thread shows the general likelihood of putting a bike on the ground as a new rider. It's extremely high. Heck, the main protagonists in this thread alone have 3 crashes between them in the past month or two. To ignore those odds, and think that someone one is immune, isn't a rational decision. It's either an uninformed or an immature one, and getting someone both informed and hopeful more mature about this is the main point in having riding buddies that you'll keep over the years.

Alex who once said your not going to crash. No **** your going to crash it happens to everyone! doesnt matter if its your fault or not. I wear my gear because if I do go down I want the injuries to be as minor as possible. If someone doesnt give a **** and wears no gear its there fault if they cut some cuts, thats no up to me or YOU. Read what im saying and not what you think im saying

I don't feel it's accepting them - it's accepting that you can't change them. Just like I don't accept your view but I accept that I can't change it. To say "it has a good chance of ending badly," now there is something shortsighted. Not wearing gear does *not* make you a poor rider. It means you make a poor decision before walking out the door but it says nothing of the decisions you make while riding. Squids are hardly more likely to crash than the rest of us.

Why are you reading about genitalia size into this? You are espousing the opinion of an unskilled, inexperienced newbie. Not your fault, you are one. I'm disagreeing with you, not fighting with you. Riding with people who don't care about safety is a bad idea. If you're still riding a year from now, come back and visit this thread and share what you've learned in the interim.

You are dead wrong on this. Those who don't understand or care about safety in one facet have a huge correlation with those who needlessly crash. One takes this hobby seriously, or one doesn't.

Because you argue with me on everything alex, your not giving good information your just trying to force your point on people. This is the point im trying to make, if you dont like the way that I think get over it, im not going to think like you. I care about myself and others, clearly you dont know who I am. I help my friends like they are family, my hands out to my friends all the time. Ive jumped out of bet at 11pm to go help someone start there CBR after the battery died

Your not the almighty

I see how it's possible I just simply don't agree. It could just as easily "needlessly" crash as any squid. The fact that they don't take the extra steps to protect themselves, for whatever reason, doesn't mean they're out there riding trying to crash. A lack of desire to gear up does not mean there is a lack of desire to be safe.
