Project: Fix my $700 2007 Ninja 250

Edit:

Guess I will make this my project/update thread. Go to bottom for newest info.

Guy is selling a 2007 250r with 50XX miles on it. Someone attempted to steal it via screwdriver and destroyed the ignition. It was also knocked down and has some damage to the front fairing/blinker. The steering is locked and turned. So I'm trying to decide if I want to buy/ride/flip this. It almost seems too good to be true. He swears it ran fine just a week ago. It is 2+ hours away so that's why it's a tough decision. Comes with title and all. Even has receipt from when he bought it from a dealer at 4k miles.

Without taking it apart think I can test the engine just buy pushing it around in gear in circles to test the compression?

Is this a no-brainer buy?

Thanks all!

If you are mechanically inclined then that's a good buy.

^^ werd.

Assuming 1) the damage has been fully disclosed and there's no surprises and 2) that the title is clear, this could be a steal. $400 of parts/paint (and a little time) and you could sell it for at least $1700, or ride it as your own pride and joy.

Those are two big assumptions though.

Welcome to the site, Jess !!!

The miles are too low for that year, which may bring more problems after you repair the obvious.

How much experience do you have repairing motorcycles?

I could yes, but that wouldn't unlock the steering would it?

Not too much on moto's but I do work on my sport quad... LT-R 450... im not amazing mechanically but I can figure it out. I work on unmanned aircraft for my career, sure I can figure a simple bike out.

The guy i bought it from today bought it from a dealer in March 2013 for $3000 with 400X miles on it, ran great for him and just bought it for $700 with a messed up ignition, and 5k miles.

Why are the miles too low? It was completed done over at 4k miles/4 months ago so hoping I don't have too many issues. Just gotta get the ignition swapped.

Looks like both Motosport.com/rockymountain have a 3-5 day delay for shipping on the ignition. Was hoping to have it Tuesday haha...

Will keep this thread updated

Congrats on the bike. My thought was that if you hotwired it, you could make sure that it would start, and that would be better than trying to push it in a circle. You could even put it up on the center stand and run it through the gears, make sure the clutch engages, make sure it shifts properly, make sure none of the gears pop out (although that might only happen when it actually has a load) and you could at least get some idea about it rather than buying it hoping it works.

Now that you own it I believe that you can play with the forks and release the lock, I'm not sure exactly what to do but I know that some people put their clip ons on in a way that the lock no longer works to give themselves more clearance. Might be fun to mess around with it until you get the new parts.

My 2007 has rolled over 24K miles.
These things are built to be working, and this one has remained steady for long periods.

That inactivity induces internal/external rust, corrosion (from fluids that go bad with time), dirty carburetors, hardened seals and hardened tires.

Hope you got a bike in good condition and I would recommend a full service, including replacement of all fluids.

I got an 07' last year with 2k miles on it... the valves were never adjusted (i saw big problems when i hit 6k )

Make sure the carbs were cleaned and the valves were adjusted if you do go through with this
