[faster and faster] - 2016 BMW G310R unveiled, marks BMW's foray into Asian and South

The 2016 BMW G310R has been co-developed with the India-based TVS Motor, and marks BMW's foray into Asian and South American, though the bike will also be sold in Europe

Asia has some of the biggest motorcycle markets in the world and they're growing fast. Asian markets like India, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and others, which until a few years ago were all about 100cc commuter bikes and scooters, are now moving in the direction of bigger, faster, sportier bikes, and companies like Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Benelli and KTM are cleaning it up with 250-400cc sportsbikes. And now, BMW want a slice of the action, which is why they have tied up with TVS Motor, which is currently India's 3rd largest manufacturer of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds.

The first motorcycle to be born from BMW-TVS alliance is the new BMW G310R, a nippy little all-purpose roadster that can deal with bad roads, get by on low(er) quality fuel and is yet fun to ride. With some styling cues from the S1000R, the 2016 BMW G310R is powered by an all-new 313cc liquid-cooled fuel-injected 4-valve DOHC single-cylinder engine, which produces 34bhp at 9500rpm and 28Nm of torque at 7500 revs. With the bike weighing 158 kilos, this engine will provide performance that is perfectly adequate for the 250-400cc naked sportsbike market. With comfortable ergonomics, a plush suspension set-up, tubular steel chassis (with bolt-on rear sub-frame), monoshock rear suspension and USD front fork, the BMW G310R should be the perfect tool for slicing through city traffic, dealing with bits of broken tarmac when required, and mixing it up with bigger sportsbikes on mountain twisties.

As you would expect from a BMW bike, even one that has the smallest motorcycle engine ever produced by the German manufacturer, the G310R boasts excellent build quality and a fair sprinkling of high-tech, including 2-channel ABS, a high-tech LCD multifunction instrument cluster and 300mm front disk brake with radial-mount 4-piston calliper. The bike rides on 17-inch wheels, with 110/70 (front) and 150/60 (rear) tyres.

The new BMW G310R will be on display at the EICMA show in Milan next week, and we expect it to be launched in various European, Asian and South American markets early next year. BMW Motorrad aims to increase its sales to 200,000 units per annum by the year 2020, and we suppose it's bikes like this new G310R which will help them accomplish their mission. "We want to sustain our profitable growth in the motorcycles segment over the coming years and make a lasting contribution to the success of the BMW Group," says Peter Schwarzenbauer, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for BMW Motorrad. "To achieve this, BMW Motorrad will develop its business with new products and expansion in growth markets," he adds.

"With the BMW G310R, BMW is bringing a genuine premium offering to the segment below 500cc. We will also be expanding our urban mobility offering in this class – including bikes with electric drivetrains," says Stephan Schaller, head of BMW Motorrad.
