Wider tire in the back?

Hi,

I curently have a 130/70 tire in the back, which is the stock size. I was wondering, will a 140/70 or 150/70 fit on the stock rim? Also, will it interfere with anything?

What are your thoughts?

I have a 140 kenda on mine. if you do a google search or ninjettewiki search you will find tons of threads on this subject. 150's will fit, but just barely.

I've run 140's in both Pirelli DRIIs and Bridgestone BT45s with no fitment issues. I've heard Michelin PR4s 150's will just fit, but since I have a hugger and some wires running between the tire and swingarm, I haven't wanted to risk anything rubbing.

Not thread jacking, but just offering choices. Heard a lot of noise about the Michelin Pilot Street tires when they first hit the scene, just haven't heard any ride reviews. Unfortunately, every one is out of stock of these tires. Whats up with that? Was about to scoop a 140.

Generally, going to 140 won't hurt. Just understand that the bike was designed for a 110 up front, 130 in rear. Changing will change the lean in, and many aspects, some of which you may not notice. I have a 120/130 on mine from the previous owner. My lean in is completely different. Not a solid curve from straight up to lean. More aggressive at end of lean. I was hoping a 140 in the rear would help, but not many with a setup like mine.

Whatever you choose let us know.

140 will be more useable then a 150, I currently have a 140 on my rear and a centimeter of thread left after a track weekend. the 150 has about an inch of unused thread. the 150 thread unused is pretty much perpendicular to the road surface when mounted.

You will need to lean your bike a little more for same speed and turn, your suspension will work a little less effectively and you will force the frontal tire to go to the limit (edge) before the rear reaches similar point.

When I first bought my bike it had 150/60-17, it works without any mod; however, 140/70-17 would be better for the bike. It sucks there's not a lot of OEM tire selections for our bike. It would be cool if B-Stone made BT-003 for 130/70-17.

Without changing the rim the 140/70 will be the better choice because it fits the 3.50 inch rim but the 150/60, which has nearly the same circumference like the 130/70, needs a 4.00 inch rim already.

So, you're saying it's better to stick with factory size?

You may be oversimplifying it a bit. There are reasons to run a 140 on the rear. I run a 140 on the rear of my track bike, because it offers that little bit of extra cornering clearance. For street riding, though, I'm not sure there's much of a point.

You can try it. Worst that will happen is you ride it for a few thousand miles and change back. Or if you really hate it, take it off and sell to someone for slightly less than you paid.

Better is relative.
Those were just the thoughts of mine for which you asked.

People who know about, design and manufacture these machines, try using the bigger diameter, the minimum profile and the lightest possible tires for a determined purpose.

What is better for one purpose may be worse for another.
There must be a reason for not seeing scooters or Batcycles at MotoGP or Motocross races.

Draik runs Pirelli Diablo SC1 110/150 and absolutely loves that set up. He's got about 1/4" on the front and 3/4" on the rear left but never has to worry about "running out of tire" like he was doing with a 120/140 Bridgestone set up.

There are no clearance issues with the Pirelli 150.

The tire has no clearance issue cause it's a 150/60/17. However, 150/70/17's can pose an issue.

Just saying so people don't assume any 150 will fit....

I've just put on Michelin Pilot Power 120/60 and 150/60, didn't mod, all factory stuff.
I haven't got any problem like can't fit or rubbing on my swingarm. btw I'm 65kg
For the other people said it will lose power or hardly lean, honestly I can't notice that at all.

Yeah, but you'd have to get new swing arms and it'll be extended out looking like a drag bike (this photo set has a side view). 140 would be perfect for stock wheel. 150 fits but it will pinch and road contact will be minimized. I had 150 on my stock wheel and it didn't feel too great as it was pinched and the tires weren't rounded. I went with 4.5" wheel and now the 150 fits perfect and looks wider than when it was on stock wheel.

I have the stock 130 and love it. we dont have any curves, but I have 2000+ miles on mine and it's just starting to square off. I guess I need to go back to TN!

What about 140/80-17 or 130/80-17? I found a guy who has these tires and has a good deal on them.

Which brand and model?
On the avg., your profile will be high. Instead of a tire circumference of 75-77" (130/70/17 & 140/70/17) it will be more like 80-82". In other words your tires will look like big ass ballons and be a very tight fit, if it fits at all.

I'm running the Michelin Pilot power 150/60ZR17 rear and Michelin Pilot power 110/70ZR17 up front ... *** my opinion *** the bike by far out performs the stock crap IRC rubber and size... running Nitrogen in the tires also as the climate change here in Nova Scotia is all over the map lol..

Not really necessarily, it looks like that the stock swing arm is ok with the 5.5 inch rim from the ZX6R and a 180/55R17 tire http://www.ninja250thailand.com/boar...&topic=51414.0
By the way there are much more here with the same modification...

Now hold on a minute Roland because this goes beyond interesting...
I don't understand much from the descriptions but judging from the pics that guy has fitted a whole ER-6 front system (ninja 650) with its discs along with a 250 stock front rim or what?
the swingarm looks stock but rear tyre also looks as stock ER-6 size which I believe is 160/60....
or are both rims oversize but have the 250's looks ??
I saw he writes about ZX-6R "rear mag" but what does that mean ?
could you provide some more info on that please ?

last but not least... how did he fit the ER-6 front on the 250 ? is it "plug and play" fit or did he have to chop off the stem and put the 250's welded on ?? if it is not a bolt-on fit, I believe @Rassie 's choice of putting an inverted ZX-6R front is way better...

Nick you're asking me the impossible since you can't imagine what it means to talk to these guys here.
For me there is the problem that I don't speak the language and then I use my wife for translating, but she doesn't understand anything about technical things. So the guys then talk with her about how blue the sky is and there I stand with my pulled-down pants...
So as I understand for the future I don't post anything from here no more.
