License Plate Bulb Type?

I just bought a 2004 Ninja 250 this week. Does anyone know what type of bulb the license plate light takes? I thought the bulb was burned out but then found out the original owner removed the bulb. He let the registration expire so probably removed the bulb so his plates couldn't be seen at night.

Not sure if the license plate bulbs are the same on the current-gen and pre-gen, but here's a link to the new-gen info...

Alex, thanks for your response. I also saw that posting prior to posting mine. After reading it again, it still seemed inconclusively. I will probably need to go to the auto parts store and use trial and error unless someone else responds with a definite answer.

Look for an R5W. That's what was marked on the one I removed from my 2006 to replace it with LED. The base is BA15S. Many bulbs use that base, the main difference is the R bulbs have a fairly small glass bulb compared to, say, the 1156.

I searched for a week for a R5W. None of the auto parts stores carry it so I tried a car-size BA15S one. It turned out to be too large and it burn a hole in the light hood. I finally bought one for about $2.50 from a dealer.

It sounds like you got one of the high-power bulbs. Here's a handy bulb reference site: http://www.donsbulbs.com/cgi-bin/r/b...ba15s~ece.html

I converted mine to LED. It is brighter, uses less power, and will never burn out. Ebay is a good source for LED bulbs.

Hey Frank I pm'ed you about the bulb. It looks like you got one so you can disregard it.

For anyone else: I have a spare bulb/wire (the bulb and setup) from the old fender I'll give to anyone for the cost of shipping.

Just had to replace my License Plate Bulb to pass inspection today. I have read other post as that what bulb is compatible or a suitable replacement to the stock bulb. Here is what I found;

The stock bulb is a Stanley R5W bulb designed for 12 volts / 5 watts max, avg. life of the bulb is approx 500 hours

The more suitable replacement bulb is the Sylvania 67LL Mini Bulb. This bulb is designed for 13.5 volts / 8 watts max. Operating at 12.8 volts, wattage is 7.3 watts. Light output is 41 lumens and has an avg. life of approx 9,000 hrs.

The bulbs are the exact same size, but the 67LL (Long Life) bulb is better and a slight bit brighter and can be found at any auto parts store. The 67LL bulb is used on autos as a license plate bulb. This bulb will fit the 2001 -2007 Ninja 250 as well as the 2008-2011 Ninja 250.

Some have replaced the stock bulb with a 1156 bulb. This bulb will fit because the base is the same size, but may be a tight fit inside the housing. This bulb is much brighter (26.9 watts / 402 lumens) However this bulb may produce a little more heat, as it pulls 2.10 amps compared to the .57 amps of the 67LL, and has an avg. life of approx 1200 hours.

I was specifically looking for small white bulbs to make my own integrated tail light with that will allow me to wire my redundant undertail's LED signals without resistors or a replacement flasher relay. 1156 looked too large and looked like it would block part of the reflector/collector with its own mass, so I started looking for other alternatives. Would these work well as blinker bulbs? I imagine that the extra brightness of 1156 would be superior.

The blinker/turn signal bulbs have a unique base that has an offset pin, so the 67 bulb will not work. I have looked for a suitable incandescent replacement but have not found one yet. I believe someone did find some LED ones. Maybe here.http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-b...s.htm%23bau15s

I wasn't going to salvage Kawasaki's sockets, especially because I could sell the blinker assembly (those are always in demand!). I did want to them to be incandescent so that I could avoid needing a new flasher relay. Thanks though.
