fairing / windshield (???) buzz

I'm getting a really obnoxious buzzing from my fairing or windshield at middle RPMs. It's only when I'm moving, so it's kind of hard to isolate, but I think it's where the windshield connects to the fairing. It stops at speed (maybe 50 or so) I assume because the wind pressure is high enough to hold it firm.

All of the windshield bolts feel tight...just wondering if anybody else is having the same or similar problem.

I don't know if it the same but i could swear my engine hits some kind of resonance at like 5.5k rpm.

It sounds bad and i wanted to know if that's normal or not?

I have something similar. It's mainly at slower speeds though (when I can hear it). I think it may be where the windshield meets the fairing around it.

This is a common problem also. You just need to oil around your speedo sensor on the front wheel

I tightened the bolts around the windshield a few turns, and it seems to have fixed it.

Hopefully might work for some of you as well...just be careful not to overtighten.

I changed out the washers for the fairing bolts to some rubber ones I found at home depot. The noised stopped. I have to make sure the bolts are tight every so often but no more buzzing sounds!!

I tried that with no results. I'm pretty sure I over tightened, but that was after not over tightening and it still not stopping. So yeah, I was thinking about cutting up bits of rubber band and putting them between the shield and fairing.

I changed all my washers to some rubber ones with a metal disk on top. I got them at home depot and they were cheap. Before I did it I had a lot of bolts coming loose. I even lost a few. But since I changed th washers I haven't lost a bolt or heard any vibrations.

Could you elaborate on this? Does anything need to be removed? Type of oil?

I cant say too much on what to use, but it seems people have been using WD-40.

The buzz is back...looks like I need a new approach, as I don't want to overtighten the windshield bolts.

Sorry about the late reply I was out on the bike all afternoon.

I replaced all the washers on the smaller bolts (I think they are #8 if not they are #10 bolts I just can't remember right now).

I picked them up at Home Depot. They were about a buck for a two pack. So they are not cheap, but being ruber with Metal on the top they really seemed to get the job done. I have not had any vibration noises or lost bolts since I put them on.

No worries, thanks for getting back.

The windshield bolts or the fairing bolts? I assume by "small", you mean the windshield ones, but I want to be sure. The current washers seem to be plastic or more likely nylon.

I tightened the fairing bolts a bit yesterday, and that seemed to help, but I still get sort of a harmonic resonance at 5500 - 6000 RPMs.

I replaced both the windscreen and fairing washers. They were all the same size threads, just the length was a little bigger. I also replaced the ones on the side of the tank. I probably went overkill, but I figured it wsa better to stay consistant throughout the bike.

Cool. Will go to HD today today to see if I can find them. I think I'll start with the windshield...probably just put them on in the parking lot. Then I'll go back for more if it doesn't go away.

You're not sure about the washer size? If not, I'll just take a bolt off and take it in with me.

Worst case, it's an excuse to take a ride.

THANKS AGAIN!!! Will report results.

Here is a pick. I circled the washers I replaced. There were 12 washers in all.

Did the same thing with the rubber washers. I did put a drop of Loctite Blue on all the bolts that got that treatment--which is all the fairing bolts. I also treated all of the rubber washers and expansion rubber (for the windscreen) with Armor-All. Keeps the rubber flexible.

I tried something a bit different, and it appears to have worked.

I had a set of adhesive round foam disks in my junk drawer, and I put them on the windshield at each bolt hole. This created just a bit of space between the windshield and fairing and seems to have eliminated the buzz.

I'd imagine 3M foam would work, or a thin rubber washer, or the pile side of adhesive velcro. Just try to find something in black, as it will show just a bit at the top...though I think I might remove the little strip at the top, as I don't think it's doing anything.

I took a pic as I was doing it, just in case it worked. Other than it being a bit tricky to squeeze the bottom part of the windshield in, it was a piece of cake. Also, remember that the longer bolts go on the bottom of the windscreen.

Anyway, I took it for a spin and all I hear now is engine and wind.

No, the bike's less than two months old and they were perfect...but they are almost flush with the windscreen.

It's just a design flaw.

Doubt it. They were pretty loose when it started, and tightening them helped for a bit. I think it's just a perfect combination of spacing and harmonic resonance from the engine at middle RPMs in my bike (and apparently a few others).

At any rate, it turned out to be a pretty easy (and free) fix.
