am i screwed or what?

so last night after a long day at work "msf" i came home and the sister in law was at the house. she had been bugging the wife for a while about wanting to go out on the ninja, so we got geared up and took off. about 10 mins into the ride i hear a sound ive never heard in 7 years of riding. i pull over and i can smell exhaust. so my first thought was maybe something with my header, so i crawl under the bike and nothing is wrong with the headers. then a sinking feeling comes over me and i realize the sound is coming from one of the spark plug wells... i get everything stripped off and i can see the cap for the spark plug has popped up. ill skip the mile long walk in the pouring rain and the wife wrecking my car on her way to come get me... long story short my ****ing plug well is stripped and i cant get a plug to seat in it...

so the question is how screwed am i? ive looked around and it seems like the repair would either cost me close to half of value of the bike, or i could risk messing it up alot more and try to fix it myself. any one here have any experience with this?

sorry to hear your wife crashed your car. hope she is alright. hope the wife is well too.

This happened to me exactly two seasons ago. Take the head off. Take it to a machine shop. They'll drill out the plug hole, reverse tap it, and insert a helicoil. I've had no problems ever since.

I made a thread at the time. Title is something about engine saga. No idea. But it's there. Look it up on my profile I guess.

think im going to sell my baby  all the math im doing would show that i would exceed the value of the bike once combined with the price i paid with this repair and start losing money. not to mention been wanting a bigger bike for 7 years :P yall have seen my baby, how mush should i sell it for?

also with the msf the comp jobs, and the army i dont have alot of down time.

here are some of the specs
Full muzzy exhaust
hid headlight
new tires (90% tread)
255 green leds
15k miles on it
new handgrips and levers.

btw no matter what im not leaving this community i love yall too much and ill always be a ninjette at heart!

Just curious but your math doesn't add up. How do you sell the bike with that kind of problem for any kind of money that would NOT make it a better choice to repair it.
For instance... regardless of what you put into it in extra's... (nobody pays extra for extra's...) with that kind of repair... the bike is not able to be ridden. Most people looking for 250r's are looking for starter bikes that need NO repairs. These are typically new riders who don't have a clue. None of them will buy the bike.
If you do happen to find somebody like me who buys and repairs bikes on the side you would be lucky to get $600-$700 for it.

The better choice is to repair it. Its only labor. My guess would be around $100.00 at a machine shop if you take the head off yourself... $300.00 if you bring it to an indy and they do it. Not a big deal at all. I could have that head off in about and hour.

got 1600$ in it excluding tires cuz they dont count toward price. dont have the time to break the engine down myself or the ability to wait for it to get fixed, need a running bike by Friday to get to work. if i pay 300 to get it repaired that would put it at 1900$ and on a good day i could sell it running for maybe 17-1800$. if i parted it out or sold it all together i was thinking around 800-1000$

the smart choice would be to let it sit and buy a new one, then eventually get it repaired and sell it for around 100-200$ loss. dont need the cash, have plenty in the bank but im wanting to buy a house for my little girls asap and this will set me back a few months

That's the thing though, John's right. Nobody is paying $800 - $1000 for a non-running 10 year old 250. Fix it and it's worth something, don't fix it, and you'll have a hard time giving it away for $250.

Bah. I wouldn't buy a non-running 250 for any amount of money, no matter what parts were on it. $500 maybe. If you're set on selling, you're likely better to part out. And that's a hassle.

How to fit a helicoil to a ninja, Bottom line take it to a pro to do the job
http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Helicoi...park_plug_hole

Alternative, buy a complete ebay head and sell your existing rockers and cams individually to cover it

@7oxSin if you bring the motor to me I'll fix it for free. I have the heli coil but you'll need to get a new head gasket and any other things you want/need replaced.

CB you're a badass, that's an awesome offer

LUPE. Drop the motor. Drive to CB. it'll be cheaper than shipping. Do it mang. You don't get an offer like that very often.

Whatever you want to do. If you end up keeping the 250 find a way to get it to my house and I'll fix it up.

I love working on those motors. They're a treat compared to the 4cyl motors.

Or pull the head and ship it to her... I just shipped a textbook bigger than the ninjette head to MI for $6.00.

Actually I have most of a spare engine at my shop (aka mini storage), all I really have any use for is the cylinder block and the pistons, the head's in good shape as far as I can tell. It's yours if you want to come after it in Columbia.

Let me specify that if you'll take the whole engine less the pistions and cylinders it's yours. I need the space back.

@7oxSin

Oh it'll fit in the floorboard in front of your passenger seat without any trouble, or just the trunk of a car. That's the head my 6 year old is holding in my profile pic it's a little bitty engine. No need for a truck. PM sent.

Somewhere I have a picture of a ZX10r motor in the trunk of my z4.

At some point there was also an ENTIRE 2009 r6 in my z4. Just in pieces but it was all there.

Nice glad it worked for you! I finally got mine together and legal over the weekend, rode about 100 miles Sunday night but now it's losing a lot of power so it's about to be back apart for a minute. If I get it back together before it's too cold let's hook up for a ride one weekend.
