what the actual ****, didn't expect a jump scare like that

too fast and sudden to be reverse, car was probably hit but I don't see another vehicle.
This is definitely one of those situations where you're kinda just ****ed

The translation on the YouTube page says, courtesy of Googleese, "This is how I blew a**h*** Cross-taxi driver from oncoming 30.06.2014g. As a result of extensive groin injury followed by surgery and a broken right hand - insert plate."

Managed to freeze it just as the rear began moving, you can see the front tires are still straight despite the rear starting to move up and in. Looks like the red car was hit in the back.

Yes, looks like wrong time/wrong place; that red car got clobbered just as the bike arrived.

It looks to me at first the red car on the left backed away from the lead car, probably to make a u-turn. I however don't see the back-up lights on the red car on. I live in a high volume commuter traffic area, but I just won't lane split. Legal yes, but just not worth the risk. In an ideal world it would be safe, but there's just too many head-in-the butt people out there. WTF. Anyway, I'm buying a camera and mounting it on the bike. I'm surprised that one of the cars wasn't a Prius. Prius drivers are Satan.

That scared the **** out of me. Almost jumped out of my chair. That red car moved so unnaturally fast that it must have been shunted from the front.

@Kevin1956: I don't see why this video stands as evidence that lane splitting is risky. That rider could have been behind and to the right of the red car in the next lane and been hit. Hell - he could have been sat where the red car was and taken the full shunt - or... seen it early enough that he could have saved himself by lane splitting between the two parallel cars in front. This isn't a point against lane splitting. This is one of those rare, extremely unfortunate situations where the rider had no prior warning of the impending situation and no opportunity to avoid it.

Yeah, there were no reverse lights...and that car just jumped back! Not intentional, just horribly bad timing.

Yeah this had nothing to do with lane splitting really. The motorcyclist could have gotten it even worse if he had just been sitting where the red car was.

The only (seriously stretching) connection with risky lane splitting I can see someone trying to argue... If he hadn't been splitting, he would have been well clear of the accident, stuck back wherever he started from vs being right there when the red car was hit.

Damned if ya do, damned if ya don't.

Well you can take that further and just stop leaving the house. No more outside dangers!

Based on the title of the video, they didn't. One of the riders suffered a broken neck and died on the way to the hospital, the other suffered cuts and bruises but survived.

i think there was someone trying to either cross the busy street or make a left. in front and totally misjudged his speed and approach and hit the mazda from the front left pushing it back and into the rider. It was hit with such force that it did a backwards wheelie.

this also doesnt make lane splitting unsafe. Had he been in the place of the mazda it would be much worse. Just bad timing.

Put it this way. I have lane split with caution for 45 years (legal here) with no incident.
Meanwhile in the car I have been rear ended in car queues 3 times.
Both red cars in the vid were hit whilst in queues
Draw your own conclusions.

ps despite appearances of red car intent it says down thread that the accident was caused by an oncoming taxi driver falling asleep at the wheel, hence the lack of reversing light on the Mazda.
