Wow, I finally rode a bike

So I took my MSF course this weekend and had a blast. I was really nervous the first time I got on the bike but it went away 5 seconds after I got going. As a general rule I am a pretty laid back person and I figured I would be happy just sort of cruising around. Turns out a bike pushes some buttons for me that I didn't know I had and according to the instructors I am a very aggressive rider. There is something about leaning into a turn giving all you can coming out of it that gets me going. Its really weird I don't like driving fast I hate roller coasters or anything scary but the bike... I don't know like I said its weird. I will admit I was pushing things to see how far I could take it and I wont be like that on the road but man it was fun.

I had a false sense of security but locking up the front brake at 20 mph on the emergency stop pretty much brought me back to reality. Falling hurts like hell even at low speeds. I landed on my side with my elbow below my ribs and well it took a minute or two before I could get up. Nothing broken but God help me if I have to cough or lift anything. I felt like my ribs had a direct link to the suspension on my truck this morning driving into work. I passed the class and aside from dumping the bike the coaches said I did very well considering I had never been on a bike before.

I guess the thing that surprises me the most is how much fun I had on the bike and how much I am looking forward to getting one even though I had an accident. Before I went to the class I would have thought dumping a bike would have been a deal breaker for me but apparently it isn't

But ive ridden some.

My buddy who tagged along who has never ridden a motorcycle before had a similar time like you except he didnt drop it, but he was also scared to get on it at first but ended up having a blast and cant wait to get his "hog" lol

glad you have fun. I didnt think that the class would really help me that much, but that was deff not the case

I dropped the bike at the MSF course, too, during the "box." It was embarrassing, but everyone was cool about it, so I didn't let it phase me too badly.

I was pushing myself too. To me it's better that I crash over there in a controlled environment with coaches and stuff.

That was what I was thinking the whole time. I figured it was as much about learning the limits of a bike and myself as learning the basics of good form and what to do. I constantly was trying to lean farther go faster and break harder as the course progressed. I'm sure someone in the class thought I was either a showoff or just a hotdog but that wasn't it at all. I was pushing everything trying to learn as much as I could

heehee, how reassuring.

I did about the same thing, became a demon in the slalom and had the instructors thinking I must have finally gotten it! No, I just REALLY liked the leaning part!
I crashed at the second last test drill. Didn't hear the whistle (had the flu) and turned my head to see why the instructor wasn't blowing the whistle, panicked, grabbed all front, no clutch while turning to see the instructor... BANG!
All I remember is thinking that the pavement scraping against my helmet was really loud... No injuries, love the gear.

I never went back to that school since I found out later that I had gotten through the whole course without learning to use the clutch - didn't need to on a 140 dirtbike but the instructors didn't catch that and of course I didn't know any better...

So months later, I took the course at Bowmanville with RTI, people that actually LIKE sportsbikes and I had a blast - funny, I still did the same thing you did with the leaning and curves so I know exactly what you're saying. I'm cautious and timid everywhere else but I became the first student to ever scrape a peg on a CBR125. The head instructor said I was "just launching" myself into the turns. The turns kind of grab you and when you give it throttle at the right time it's like blasting you out of a deep hole then Wham! back onto the other side feel the suspension change, even out and lean down for throttle again!

I'm all giddy just thinking about it!

Sorry for the long post...again...

Whatever you do, don't make a brand new bike your first bike. Start with one of the pregen Ninja 250's. That's what I started on and I am thinking the 250 is all I'll ever need, to be honest.

During the MSF I came to a stop after an activity and 'forgot' and let go of both the brake and the clutch at the same time.

The bike bucked and I flew over the top of it landing head first into the pavement face down. Thank goodness I had my own full-face helmet on. The helmets they provided were open-faced.

Nothing like people resurrecting a thread that's been dead longer than they've been members. Kudos for using the search function but the OP hasn't been active in a long while and this thread has been dead since 2011...

I haven't logged on in a few weeks and it was in my 'unread posts'.

Sorry I didn't look at the date it was created/opened/last updated but you don't have to be a jerk about it.

Jo - it showed up in everyone's new posts, no worries. Chone was talking about the poster above you, and unless I'm missing something, I don't see where he's being a jerk to anybody.

That's my bad. It showed up in my list as an active thread. Weird. If I had saw that last-posted date I wouldn't have wasted my time. D:
