cbinker's upgrades!

Chain and Sprockets came today, fork springs and emulators probably next week.

Here is how we started today, first I found all the tools that I would need to do the swap:

The Tools:
mallet
impact gun w/compressor
12mm wrench
14mm wrench
14mm socket
24mm socket
27mm socket
Chain Tool
Dremmil with cut off wheels
Flat head screw driver
Pry Bar

First I removed the Chain, using the dremmil to grind the the rivet off. After I ground the rivet. I used my chain tool and used the punch to push the rivet out, unfortunately i broke the punch in the process causing a struggle with resizing the new chain.

Next remove the front sprocket. This is a bit of a pain in the ass as the "collar" washer is bent to prevent the nut to un screw itself. Also important to remember that this is a REVERSE threaded nut. I used my mallet and screw driver to tap around the edges of the nut to flatten the collar. Then I used the Impact gun, set FORWARD, with the 27MM socket and presto nut was off. Then I wiggled the front sprocket a little bit and it slid right out.

New front!

Slide it on, hold collar in place tighten nut by hand till you cannot tighten it anymore, then hit it with the impact.

Next remove Rear wheel, Impact gun with 24mm socket removes the nut quick. Then a little tap on the axle with a mallet. Slide out the axle. Careful to not forget where all the pieces go.

Pull the Sprocket from the cush drive and again use the impact with a 14mm socket remove the nuts and sprocket. Replace with new sprocket.

Reinstall rear wheel, maker sure the pieces go back on in the proper order. This is also a good time to grease the rear axle.

Finally the chain can be installed. I purchased a 110 link chain. I wrapped it around the sprockets to get an estimated length. I had to remove 3 links. Used the same process as breaking/cutting the first chain, except I could not use my press properly to push the rivet out. I had to be creative and use a large nail I found in my garage. I brought the chain back to the bike and rolled it onto the sprockets. I used the rear sprocket to hold the two open ends of the chain in place while I installed the master link. I pressed the link with the chain press and inserted the clip with the closed side facing rotational direction.

Wait... You're planning on running a 17 tooth sprocket in the front with a 30-tooth rear sprocket? And people said I was extreme with 15:38!

I'm probably going to run 14:38 on one of the F bikes in order to get away with a shorter chain I already have. I'd go down to 13 in the front except that I heard it's bad for the chain (to tight a bend). That said, I also heard that running 16 and up in the front requires you to remove or modify the front sprocket cover.
