Idle is all wonky
So I took my bike out for a spin its 2008 with 9,200 miles on it give or take a few. Anyways I went on a 30 minute ride around the city so a bunch of stop and go traffic. When I stopped at a light around the 25 minute mark my idle was at around 3k rpms and wouldn't go down. I know it wasn't the throttle cause the bike was in neutral and my hand was off the throttle. Anyways my quick fix was to turn the idle screw. I don't think the guy who previously owned the bike did the valve adjustment because I bought the bike at 9,100 miles. Any thoughts on this?

Go through the entire bike and make sure everything is up to par.

Is this the first time you're riding it since you got it? When was the idle screw last set? If it wasn't set when the engine was warm, your idle will be high when it does get warm.

I did notice today when I was riding around, whenever the idle was high at 3,000 rpms. When I rev'd it a little the idle would come down to 1,300-1,500 |

If the revs stick, is there any change if you close the throttle hard (ie take all the slack out)? Just asking because mine would idle at 2,000+ but if I closed the throttle completely (twisting hard forward) it drop to normal, and stay when I took my grip off the throttle.
That was all without touching the idle screw. I have my bikes' idle pretty much perfect now. When really cold it will idle at around 1,000 until warmed up (start with choke & get moving, choke off, stop at lights. Idle sits steady) Once warmed up it will stay at around 1,200 to 1,400. I'm not wanting to touch it, as it the bike gods will get angry and screw everything up for me |
