PLEASE HELP possible tranny issues?
I was riding along and the bike started becoming really sluggish, eventually it cleared up and revved and idled fine. Then I stop and fuel up, and shift into first and the bike immediately dies. I tried many different rpm's with the same result. It doesnt gradually die, it instantly dies. Anyone else had this issue, please help or im walking in the rain.

So, the immediate problem you're having is that the bike is on and idling fine in neutral, you shift into first, and it immediately cuts out?
The easiest thing to check is that your sidestand is fully up -- if it's down, the bike will die when you shift into first.

Is the bike jerking forward as you put it into first, or does it die immediately in place with no jerk at all?
If it just dies immediately, it sounds like an electrical problem, and a likely culprit is a faulty sidestand switch. Another option is the clutch switch, (less likely), and least likely, is a flaky kill switch itself. If it's just doing weird unexplainable electrical things, yet the switches seem good, another possibility is simply an old and failing battery. EDIT: good catch Carolyn, the switch might not be faulty at all if the sidestand is accidentally left down...

Is it a pre- or post-op tranny?

If it's pre.... does it still count as a tranny or just a cross dresser?

Setting aside the general rule of the simplest explanation often being the correct one -- mechanical issues, like a transmission issue, are usually fairly "violent". You would feel the bike buck or lug or otherwise physically respond to the transmission locking. Electrical issues are usually fairly smooth and binary. The fact that your bike dies immediately with no movement at all makes me think it's electrical, not mechanical.

Does the bike idle and run while it is on the centerstand?
How about when you put it in first gear (or any other gear) while it's parked and engine running on the centerstand? Make sure that sidestand is fully retracted. |

What is the idle rpm?
Mine is set around 1500-1700 rpm.. I usually leave the choke on for good 5 min. before riding off... engine would idle near 4k rpm with choke. |

Did the pre-gens have issues with vapor lock inside the gas tank?

try popping the cover to the gas tank when you are having running issues and see if that alleviates the problem.
from your earlier symptoms, though, it sounded like a sidestand switch to me. |

Oh my god forum, If figured it out and it was being out of gas. i switched to the reserve and it seems to be alright. BUT i still have a question, i contacted the previous owner and he told me put a jet kit in it put on pods deleted the airbox etc etc. I only had 135 miles on the tank, is that insanely bad? are the mods extensive enough to account for such poor gas mileage?

there's no way that trannys don't hang.
you should be getting close to 200 miles before having to switch to reserve. fill up the tank (to the top), reset the trip meter to 0000 and then see how long it takes before the bike needs to be switched to reserve. Don't forget to put the petcock back to the ON position or you won't have a reserve to go to next time. |
