another old dirt bike, 87 rm125

picked up a new project bike few weeks ago and have been going through it.

Trying to rebuild it on a tight budget, so far so good other than one minor issue.

This will be the rebuild thread

Picked the bike up in rough shape but most important things looked good and more importantly the price was decent. $200, i over paid but was ok with the price. Was hoping to get it for $150 guy wouldn't come down past $225 but i weaseled another $25 off him when i picked it up the next day.

Engine was completely disassembled in bags and boxes

Began by putting the bottom end of the engine back together, cleaning lots of things up, stripping multiple layers of crap paint off of everything in prep for new paint or just to be clean.

As long as the engine looks good and no chassis parts need completely replaced due to being broke, most of the work involved with these types of bike restos is just cleaning everything one way or another and painting a few things. Costs nothing but time. The main costs r just replacing wear and tear items, mainly bearings and seals, all can be done pretty cheap as long as you do the work yourself

Bottom end back together with new seals and painted, + clear coat (engines were painted blue on these bikes from the factory)

frame cleaned up sanded and painted = clear coat

and linkage got new bearings and seals.

Found a crack in the swing arm pivot unfortunately, had to pick up a used on one ebay, should be here in a few days. This is what i was talking about when i said replacing chassis parts. This is an extra $60 i didn't want to spend. I might have cracked it myself when i was getting the old rusty seized bearings out. Normally i press them out but i was being lazy and kind of rushing so i pounded them out.

Only other issue i have noticed is there is a missing spoke on the rear wheel, not sure where i can find just one spoke.... ill figure it out.

no, ill need a new piston and rings. I need to measure the bore to see where the cylinder is at. With any luck it doesn't need a new bore and i can just but a piston and ring and be done with it.

^ i really like restoring late 80's early 90's dirt bikes.... especially 2 stroke because they are so simple and easy and cheap.

Dunno, i like taking a bike that would either get parted out or just sentenced to death one way or another and getting it back into shape and for very little money at that. They just need some TLC, they are great machines and when i am done having my fun with it someone else can enjoy it and at a reasonable price. New dirt bikes are getting to be ridiculously priced, it blows my mind, especially the 2 strokes.

Some new 2 strokes tip the scale at $9k new for what though? a simple engine, steel frame and fancy suspension??? You can get a left over 600 supersport street bike for close to that much, 4 cylinders, 4t fuel injected, fancy electronics ect... boggles the mind

Ill fix this bike up and maybe sell it for $1000, and it will be a blast to ride. Beats paying $9k IMO

Starting to look like something.

Engine in the frame. Got the wiring done, most were missing connectors. It has spark which is great, nice to finally know the stator all works.

Shouldn't be much longer till it is all done, really just waiting on a few big parts to come in the mail. Swingarm and air box. It came with an air box but it wasn't the correct one, previous owner must have just finagled something they had laying around in there

After that i will still need to buy some small odds and ends, bolts, maybe clutch cable, front brake system, stuff like that. I am trying to hold off on buying some things that i think i can still get OEM from an online parts store so i can just make a list in the end and order everything at once

on a somewhat unrelated note, i bought another old bike lol

won't make a thread for this one. It's a 1974 Kawasaki G4TR 100. Little 2 stroke 100.

It's really neat. Originally it would have had street stuff, lights signals ect... but at some point someone gutted all electronics other than ones necessary for it to run. Fine by me, i want it for vintage cross country racing. You need a bike 74 or 75 and older to race in the true vintage classes. So this is my ticket in.

Neat bike, has oil injection, has a High/Low range selector. So it essentially has 10 gears. 5 high and 5 low. I won't have any use for the high range as it was more for riding on the street so ill leave the selector cable and switch off and just leave it in low range.

Has a rotary disc valve system which is interesting.

It's already almost completely apart, replacing some engine seals and gaskets as it was burning oil bad, clutch was slipping, putting new tires on it, need to replace cushions for rear cush drive, they were dust. Other than that, grind some rust and paint, polish some chrome and give her hell at the races, should be fun

Cool

Seals of the rear shock absorbers should be completely worthless now.
Hope those are serviceable for future races.

Rotary disc valves were the first attempt to make breathing timing of the cylinder asymmetrical:

Slow going, haven't been doing much, just a little here and there. No rush as i need to find an airbox to carb boot, been looking for a while. None on ebay and have not found any at any cycle salvage places yet.

Really the only thing it needs before i can fire it up. Mechanically it is pretty much done. I just need to finish polishing the tank, shrouds and side plates. They are looking decent now but could be a good bit better, just takes time. Once they are done, ill put the graphics and number plates on and it will look sharper. Also need to figure out what i am going to do to restore the seat cover a bit. I have an idea just need to do it.

Probably wouldn't learn much other than a few tricks, it's all nuts and bolts in the end.

The bulk of fixing up old 2 strokes or most any old dirt bikes is just stripping them down and cleaning them up. That is where 90% of my time is. Takes a while to clean off years of oil grime and crappy paint and sanding and polishing plastics if you are going to restore them. Then the the bulk of the other 10% of time is spent trying to figure out which used parts on ebay are actually correct and then find it at a decent price Wrenching on the bike is actually pretty quick and painless.

I'm waiting on a back order part for this to come in the mail and then it goes up for sale. I really like it but i could use the money right now.

I was keeping my eyes on a few cheap projects bikes for sale locally, one is an 85 yz250, i went and seen it already but for what the guy was asking it was a no brainer to walk away after seeing the poor thing and i didn't want to insult him with my offer. I noticed they dropped the price but i think someone might have snagged it as the new price was reasonable and i haven't seen the ad today.

ha. I'm working on old mopeds and I'd say each time I find broken/worn things, it takes me about 30 minutes to find the right replacement part online.

I love it though. see my moped thread about the 1978 vespa for more pics of old broken rusty turds...

Nice! I have seen a few of these bikes up for sale over the last few weeks. If they were a little closer i would definitely take a look but i'm just not that interested in any of them in particular for me to make the trip.

I plan on picking up another late 80's early 90's 2 stroke dirt bike in the next few months for vintage racing next season. I need to finish working on my 74 kawi it is still burning tranny oil and i'm in the middle of rebuilding the forks on my 500. But despite all the old bikes i typically have i might have treated myself to something a little newer a couple months ago

2018 yz250x Love it, best bike i have ever owned and ridden.

I don't know how you can invest so much time in a bike and then sell it. If I work on a project bike I become one with it and can't sell it. I've got an 82' Honda FT500 Ascot. I won't sell it even though I think it's a piece of s__t and always did. But it's a very good running example and I made a-lot of modifications that make it a much better bike. A guy knocked on my door two months ago wanting to know if it was for sale. Nope! I haven't ridden it in three years - can't sell it.

Bill

P.S.; Maybe I need professional help?

I would have kept it if it was financially feasible at the time.

I have owned enough and sold enough bikes and other stuff over the years that most everything is easy come easy go even when i put work into it. Plus it doesn't hurt that i typically use some of the money to buy something else Not to mention i have another project bike i don't ever intend on selling and it has been a project for a few years now. When i sell stuff i tend to throw some $ at that project to keep it moving at least.

When i picked it up i was planning on fixing it up to race but i got laid off shortly after i had picked it up and decided i would fix it up and sell it to make a little $ and i had the time to put into it lol

After i fixed it up it ran really well but i was a little disappointed with the power, guess i forgot how much the 2 strokes advanced from late 80s - late 90s especially in the HP department. It was fun to ride but wasn't exactly what i was looking for in the end.

As much as i like dirt bikes i really only need 3. A modern bike that is my primary ride and my competitive bike for fun and racing normal races. A vintage bike for vintage race series and a post vintage/early modern bike for the post vintage races I have all three of those so anything else is just taking up space i don't really have. If i am riding for fun i typically want to be on my modern bike to get the best out of the ride and push the envelope and get better so i wouldn't ride other bikes very much if they were sitting around.

Might put the cr500 up for sale soon mainly because i'm scared it is gonna break down again and i am going to have to put more $$$ into it Kinda just wanna get rid of it before then lol . I have just had some really bad luck with it. I just rebuilt the entire engine last month (for the 2nd time) so it should be good to go but again, i have had bad luck with it
