I haven't ridden one yet but the BMW S1000RR looks pretty sweet.

I'd have to go with the Suzuki GSXR 1000. It's a proven winner.
Besides, I can ride one anytime I want to.

Agree with the 996, too. I had a red 998 mono. What a bike. Wish I had kept it.

Never ridden a 1000 but the GSXR's are the sexiest thing on this planet.
I don't even have to see this years model to tell you that. That's how sexy. So sexy I'm still in my gsxr jacket on my Kawi.

I vote for the Yamaha R1. A friend of mine had one. I rode it once. It scared the piss out of me, but I liked it
At the time I had an R6. There was a huge difference between the two. |

I'm a yamaha guy so the R1 gets my vote. I haven't ridden a '09+ but the '07 my friend has that I get to ride a few times each summer is absolutely amazing. I'll have one some day, but for now the two 600R's will do

New MV Agusta F4
2nd choice would be a ZX10, 3rd would be some kind of Ducati, 4th the Aprilla even though its considered a track bike and far to harsh for normal roads. The BMW gets rave reviews but I'm not excited about it at all, I don't get excited at cars with tonnes of electronic trickery either. Gixxer and Fireblade like the BMW are great all round bikes but I'm just not interested for some reason. The R1 got lots of rave reviews about its engine, but otherwise it apparently is not a great bike, its slow steering, odd handling, 09 model had a pink frame that just looked odd. Engine is apparently smooth at constant revs but vibrates on acceleration, 1st gear is too tall to be practical, the list goes on, yet it did win most group tests last year Just goes to show you can't trust everything you read. Anyway it will be a while before I go near such big bikes, I see something like a KTM Duke 690r or a Triumph Daytona 675, or a ZX6 in my garage before then.

MV Agusta F4 1000 or the Gixxer 1000, Aprilia RSV4, Ducati 1098. I'd settle for any of them
I get my open license in a months time, and then I get to test-ride all my prospective purchases..... The list is: Daytona 675; Kawasaki ZX-6R (2008 and 1009/10 models); R6; CBR600RR; GSX-R 600 and the 750. I can't bloody wait!

RC51, the new RSV4 - never liked the Yamis, although I can admit the crossplane sounds pretty sweet in person, or theZuk. The last (as in not current) ZX10R was really sweet looking bike, and the current one in a monster, but it doesn't really call me. The Italians are lovely for sure but I think are more of lust item than a keeper. Meh, I'll keep my 6R - its more than I can use properly right now anyways.

For wanting to ride I agree with the Duc 1098 (the new Beemer is right there too). As far as comparing the ones I have ridden (couple diff year R1's, Couple diff GSXR 1000's and CBR 1000's), I like the CBR best (that's why I have one).

Nah, I've never actually ridden a liter bike, so I can't really have a favorite in terms of performance. But, based solely on the feel of the cbr1000's that I've sat on in dealer showrooms and the stylings of the hondas, if I survive long enough to get to that many cc's, I want it to be on one of these- with or without the sweet repsol graphics |

The R1 has an amazing exhaust tone, that is one reason I like it so much.
I like Kawi, but the styling isn't quite there for me. Honda, they always strike a chord with me. Suzuki is very nice as well. The other bikes tend to be pricey for what they do, but they do look good. That engine on the R1 is like a symphony for the ears. I honestly wouldn't turn down any 1000cc sportbike out there.

My Buell XB9R, hard to beat a used one at the prices. Not the ultimate track bike, but highly capable on the road from what I've experienced so far. Can't wait until it warms up and dries out. The new BMW looks really nice, apparently Keith Code schools are BMW now.
I think the latest GSXR are ugly, nothing like the old battleaxe from the 90's, those were pretty machines. |

I got a question for some of the.. ahem, "more experienced in life" members. I was not alive when Top Gun came out, but was it fairly common for people to ride the biggest and baddest sports bike of the time period with no helmet, or was that just hollywood not being very accurate?

It is kind of like the Harley crew riding without helmets. It is all about the 'look" to some people. Then you have others that follow ATGATT.
All the riders I saw wore helmets at least, that were on sportbikes.

Did they have helmet laws back then? I'm guessing thats a pretty recent thing. I know some states don't have helmet laws and I know that plenty of people ride liter bikes with no gear at all, but I'm sure if a movie came out in 2010 with a guy riding all over the place with no helmet, people would raise a pretty big fuss about it.

I'm gonna go with the R1 because its awesome... my friends boyfriend had one and he let me ride it and I was scare sh**less and I just went around the block... and this was about a week after I took the MSF course so this was my first time riding a bike apart from the one from the course... I was going about 15mph

I think helmet laws are great and should be mandatory everywhere. Responsible riders shouldn't pay higher insurance premiums because of other people's stupidity and negligence, although the Darwinian effects of the more dumb among us killing themselves off is appealing. |
