I'm a little worried...
I just turned 100 miles on my '09 today. Most of my riding has been stop light to stop light so keeping the rpms down has been relatively easy for the most part. However I have had to take it up on the Loop (posted limit is 60) a few times. How touchy is the bike about the break-in process?

Yep, ignore the break in procedures. Ride the bike as you need to and enjoy it.

Must be your first bike.... or at least first new bike. How did I know? Reminds me of me You're good, as is your bike.
If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't have babied it like you are "supposed to." |

Yep. It is indeed my first bike. More importantly though I bought it with the intent that it be my daily transportation. I plan to only take the car or jeep when weather is a factor or a trunk is necessary so it is really important that I take good care of my new ride.
Thanks! |

Well there is debate on that the factory break-in is actually a bad thing for bikes. The logic this "mechanic" (motoman) uses seems sound, but I'm not an engineer. Also I never had a car where you had to baby it for 1000 miles before you could actually drive it. Drive it normal varying your RPMs along the entire range and change the oil more often then is recommended in the first few hundred miles and your bike will absolutely love you for it.

Mine is a commuter too, so ditto on the babying. I do strongly suggest that you buy a service manual and PROPER tools, and learn to service the bike yourself.... as you are comfortable and gain confidence. You will save THOUSANDS of dollars over the life of your bike. Yes, THOUSANDS! Be smart about it..... if you aren't comfortable at first, go ahead and take it to the dealer, but make it a goal to learn a new skill every time it is serviced. Just about everything can be done at home, although I'm sure there are exceptions for those odd jobs that not everyone needs to do. |

This right here... Back in the late '70's an old mechanic I knew told me much the same information regarding break-in that MotoMan now has on the web here: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm
I've followed this type of break-in pattern on every motorcycle I've ever owned with absolutely no ill effects. I've also rebuilt many motors over the years, my own and bikes owned by friends and have seen poor ring seals on bikes that were babied during break-in, engines I broke in and later rebuilt did not show ring blow-by. The pictures on the MotoMan website showing the differences are very telling... YMMV... |

My break-in period for the 250 was like 12 miles.... riding it home from the dealer, in da rain.
