Highway cruising speed and RPMs

I know this bike is meant to cruise and ride really well at 9500 so I was just wondering what everyone's highway speed(speedo or gps) and rpms are. I just rode the highway back to work after lunch and my speedo was saying ~80 and I was running at like 10K RPMs. Is that a normal combination? I am running stock for now and considering upgrading to a 15t front sprocket.

I think that's about right cause I always say she loves 11k rpm and 90mph but I haven't had guages in years. If you commute on highway a 15T sprocket up front is all you need do. happy trails.

Thats what I thought. I was considering getting the 15T sprocket online this weekend but I really need to order some mesh gear to start with. My cousin just taught me a lesson 2 days ago.

60 mph puts me at 7k rpm, and 70mph puts me at about 8k rpm.....
then 105mph puts me at damn near redline

I'm 17, small kid. Weigh about 135 and i'm no more than 5'8.

Yeah, I'm tucked in most of the time unless I just want to stretch my back for half a minute.

After school I'll give more exact readings for how my bike does.

Lucky you all, just had to pay $225 to take it and I've been riding for 6 years. I did learn some refresher's though. Highly recommend a MSF course. Also Archerzz and blink, you guys are on different gen bikes, could that make a different in RPM?

I thought i remembered reading it somwhere I was signed up for a class last night but it was full, so I am trying to get in another one for the riding session later this summer. They fill up fast is the problem. As for gear I am going to order some mesh gear this weekend when I get paid.

It is free is PA but we pay a higher yearly registration fee and licensing renewal to fund the program ( I believe thats how it works).

Do you mind If I ask how much? I pay $48 a year for registration, but dont have to renew a drivers license (I assume thats what you mean by licensing renewal) every 4 years and its just like $12 or so.

Edit: Sorry to get off topic.

Jordan,

I hope you understand where I was coming from. I get nervous when I see relatively new riders asking about 80 mph speed checks when they most likely have not geared up and have been exposed (through the MSF) to the perils that lay ahead for any rider, new or experienced. Just wanted to make sure you got pointed in the "right" direction.

Good for you on signing up for the MSF course. I'm sure you'll appreciate it once you've completed it. remember, you should be able to receive a 10% discount on your motorcycle insurance once you've passed.

now, back to your original question...

Yea my cousin was literally in a wreck on a highway a few days ago, broke is had both his arms and his leg and is missing skin on his right side. So I understand exactly where you are coming from. I am working on getting the proper gear and my highway ride is just less than 3 miles to and from work and I usually take the back roads, just to avoid the traffic etc.

Remember blink is from canada so I believe he was talking about km/hr not mph.

I don't know your riding experience, but I would suggest taking the back roads for a little bit to become comfortable with everything. Besides the fact of the benefit of lower speeds, I actually find the highway to be extremely boring.

Wooow!!! Here in Canada, anything below 400cc costs 377$/year for registration, anything over that not sport is 638$(all customs, sport touring bikes like the 650R or Yamaha FZ6R) and sport bikes are 1425$(ZX6R, ZX10R, R6, R1, CBR etc...). Driver license cost is 80$/year. Wish I live down in the states! :P I also finished the MSF equivalent in Canada and it's 700$, so 225$ is pretty cheap in my opinion. I can't believe how expensive it is to ride in Canada compared to what it is in the states! Simply unbelievable!

While I agree canada is stupidly expensive for no reason, but in this case, you can blame quebec. I've never heard of prices like that from anywhere in canada other than quebec. Correct me if I'm wrong

Yeah you are right I am from Quebec I can't say for sure about the rest of Canada since transportation is managed by the provincial government not the federal. It used to be 325$ no matter what bike you had, scooters used to cost 66$ to register, and no driver course needed. It all changed 3 or 4 years ago, now they pay almost 300$ to register them (50cc or less) and they need a driving course that is almost 500$! A friend of mine has a Gixxer 750, it costs him 1425$ for registration, plus almost 2000$ to insure (he's 27, clear driving record), that's almost 3500$ just to be able to take it out on the road each year. That's why small displacement bikes are getting more and more popular here. I NEVER saw an old gen 250 on the road here, even if they were available dealers wouldn't keep them they were selling the 500 for like 1K more so people wouldn't buy them but with the new prices I've seen a lot of the new gen 250R on the roads, a few CBR250 and couple Ninja 400R that we have here that is not available down in the states.

Mine is 11k rpm at 80 mph. I believe I have that CDI issue so it's off my 1k rpm. I was worried initially that I was hitting this high rpm at this speed and I started looking at this forum and found out that there's an ongoing issue.
