Watch for Road Hazards - Rider Taken Off by Mattress

A story by Mark Hinchcliffe on motorbikerider.com shows the results of an Australian rider who hit a mattress in a Brisbane tunnel. The resulting endo was violent enough that the grips were torn off the Honda CBR1000 of rider Aaron Wood. He had been following a Toyota towing a cage trailer when the mattress flew out the back.

Wood went over the bars and the mattress, which began smoldering, was lodged beneath the motorcycle. “I have been riding for 20 years and never had something like this happen,” he told The Queensland Times. The authorities examined video footage from the tunnel, but had difficulty reading the license number of the Toyota. If the driver is located he could be charged with “Failure to ensure load on private light vehicle that complies with requirements” and face a $243 fine.

The report said that Australian authorities receive tens of thousands of calls a year to collect debris from the roads, including household goods, building materials and green waste, causing road closures, disruptions, injuries and deaths. Most of the errant objects come from gardeners and landscaping crews who neglect to secure their loads. Australian police frequently sweep (no pun intended) the highways for unsecured loads and “the fines range from several hundred dollars to several thousand, depending on the risk level of the load.”
