changing brake pads

Hello fellow ninjettes. Has anyone ever had to change the brake pads front and rear on a 08 ninja 250? And if so, how hard is it to do and any helpful pointers would be appreciated. Also I checkd the DIY section and couldnt find anything. Thanks

It was really easy changing the pads , here's instructions . I got the pics backwards. Four allen bolts only ...two removes caliper and two others release the brakepads from the caliper
Save the pics so you can zoom

Piece of cake; it's less than a half page in the service manual, and that includes pictures. :-)

EDIT: What he said.

Think about upgrading to the EBC HH pads. Well worth it, and cheaper than the stock ones, too (at least from my dealer). Check out www.cyclebrakes.com. Their web page is a pain to use, so just get the phone number and call 'em. GREAT customer service. Even if you leave a message, they ALWAYS call back!

yep

Super easy task. Takes about 10-15 minutes for each pad, if that long.

Depending on the location of your rear axle (how you had to adjust for chain tension) the rear can be a little bit of a pain. The rear brake hose bracket is in the way a little bit, but still a very easy job.

Hi kelly I have about 5200 miles on the original pads. I bought the bike used and it just passed inspection but the dealer told me they were getting low . So I thought I would change them just to be safe

well, you might want to double check. Dealer told another member the same thing and come to find out the pads had lots of life left.

I assume you take your bike in for servicing? They're looking to do the job for you and make some money. I find it hard to believe the pads are gone in 5K unless you are a speed demon and come sliding into every stop doing stoppies.

...unless you track the bike, then it would make sense that it's worn.

I have around 5600 miles and they barely look used. I engine brake, though, so I expect they'll last at least 5 times that mileage. I'm sure I'll find a DIY on here to perform that task when it comes time.

At 5K miles, they're worthy of a detailed inspection, they should probably last much longer than that.

Click here for an earlier thread where we discuss the merits of various brake pads

Be aware that the stock pads have a notch down the middle of them. It's a GO/NO GO indicator, just like the wear indicators on tires.

The "useable" limit of the pads will form a bridge over where the notch is. You can see it most clearly when looking at the rear pads, but the fronts are the same part number and have them too. Also, you might need to spray some brake parts cleaner on them to wash away some of the brake/road dust, as it sometimes packs in there and you can't see it.

If there is no pad material bridging the little slot on either or both pads (as they do not always wear 100% evenly), you're in the NO GO territory and should replace the pads ASAP. Be aware, also, that the aftermarket EBC and Galfer pads (higher quality, cheaper price, better availability, and better rotor wear with more predictable braking action) do not have the same indicator slot, so you'll have to measure those.

Thanks guys. I will have to double check them. Becasue I bought it used, I am not sure how the other owner rode it. I am a new rider and didnt want to take the chance.

For the EBC pads it's FA197 or FA197HH (preferred).

I just put the HH on mine, and it is definitely a nice improvement.
