Changing Throttle Cable
Yo. Here's a quick rundown.
- Crashed my bike, fairings and such broken, but I only want it running - Replace shift lever, front left turn signal, throttle cable - Throttle has a hard time snapping back, so dealership says I only gotta change the cable ( having hard time trusting them, coz they actually missed this part when they inspected. i had to let them know when i came in to look at my bike ) - Dealership (inspector) wants to charge $109/hr for 2.5 to do all three and $43 for inspection - One shop who hasn't inspected the bike is quoting $65/hr for 1.5, $50 to tow it from dealership to their shop - Another shop quoting 30 minutes The thing is, the last 2 shops actually hasn't seen the bike, so what do they know? I don't think 30 minutes doable (no experience in motorcycles though) since they gotta take things apart, gas tank, right? Anyways, I think I might just do it myself. Shift lever seems simple, so is the turn signal. I'm just clueless about changing the throttle cable. What do I have to do to change that? It's Part# 54012-0210 Cable-Throttle, Opening. I'm no backyard mechanic, but I'm pretty good with hands-on things. What exactly do I need to take apart to do this? Thanks, all. http://i53.tinypic.com/2vlo607.jpg http://i56.tinypic.com/2iursp2.jpg dealer said it's not worth trying to bend it back since it'll just snap. they seem to be right, but you guys got any opinions? note: i used [img][/img] but i don't know how to resize it. it's so big. |

Guess it's simpler than I thought (as most things are). You have to remove the throttle housing, front seat, side cover, and lower right hand fairing. You can see the throttle cable routing the whole way and it ends to the brake side of carbs. The nuts holding down the cable are 10mm IIRC. There's also two cables btw.
I just reinstalled my fairings this morning, but I can take pics of all these things tomorrow at our Tech event. |

If I claim, my insurance will go up 75% first year, 55% second, 45, 35, 25. It's not worth it.
Hmmm. I should probably pick up a rear stand now too if I'm gonna be taking the bike apart. |

Also, wouldn't I be taking the tank off? If I do, should I drain it first? I have yet to look at the manual or the bike itself, so I can't really imagine what needs to be done.
It'll be at my house on Tuesday so I'll have a better idea. |

Removing the tank isn't required, but it'll give you more space to remove the old throttle. You're basically loosening a few nuts and then removing the barrel from two cables. Here's a pic of where they end by your carbs. You can make out one of the cables and part of the second one behind it. The barrel is the little circle thing at the bottom left.
