Try this.

http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=42249

I rode my bike for the first time today after painting the can about a week ago. At some point during my ride I must have nudged the paint with my boot and it smeared clear off down to the shiney chrome.

Any one have any tips/ideas to add to prevent this from happening again? Or do I just need to be careful not to touch the can while it is hot?

VHT high temp enamels worked on mine quite well. I cleaned my can and degreased it real good before wet sanding it just to scuff the metal up for good adhesion. Just be prepared to recoat etc cause the enamels show scuffs real easy.

+1 on the rustoleum high temp - that's what i used. scuff up the can, clean it good, use several light coats, finish with a few coats of flat clear and call it good. you will like the results - i'm also part of the "no chrome zone"

well... I still like a little chrome. I wanted the 2010 factory look.

Go to my profile and check out my photo album. There should be a few pics in there.

I called around about powder-coating, but they could not guarantee that it would not "ash" up, even with special high temp primer.
How are the '10 exhaust painted?

My dad works at a powder coat place so i had my pipe done in "sandtex" black. It gives it a little bit of texture and looks really good. It seems to hold up to the heat just fine.

I too hated the chrome. I just used green scrubby pads to rough it up a bit, and sprayed it down with BBQ paint. It looks SO much more grown up now.

Is there any way to get the ring-like tip of the exhaust off to have it powder-coated to match by Tim (same guy who did my rims) and do the rest myself? No cutting, of course.

Oh yeah, I've never used it, but Harbor Freight sells DIY powder coating kits. I think you dust it on, and oven bake it.

Might be worth looking into.

Yeah, I saw those. A bit small for a whole exhaust, but rotors and sprockets might be possible.

yeah but then i think you have to re-rivet it back on. It isn't held on with screws or bolts

thanks dave, it's bulk non-reflective vinyl i cut and positioned myself - not difficult - just takes a lot of patience.

www.tapeworks.com

kits are spendy - lots of colors (solids, metallics, reflective) bulk is the way to go
