Suggested Upgrade from Sport Demons for Track Day Beginner

Labor Day did my first ever motorcycle track day. Had a whole lot of fun and learned quite a bit.

Didn't have a set of dedicated track day wheels so I ran on Pirelli Sport Demons as I could continue to use them on the street afterwards. But, over the winter I'm planning on picking up a set of dedicated track wheels and wondering what tires would be one (1) step-up from the Sport Demons. Due to my beginner skill level I'm not looking for all-out race tires or anything which will require a lot of heat build-up. Just something to would let me get a little bit more out of the bike. Or maybe it's too early to switch to a different model. I've attached photos from the end of the day to show how much I used the tires.

S20 EVO's would be perfect for what you are looking for.

Do they make S20s in Ninjette sizes?

yes they do Mr. Fist

Pirelli Diablo Rosso II's are excellent as well and can be had much cheaper to the savvy shopper.

Alpha 13 takeoffs from a MotoAmerica racer are going to be your best bang for the buck. the 150 rear is a bit pinched for the stock 250 rim but I don't think that would be a big deal at your level.

The Alpha 13's are not really race tires even though they are used for the KTM cup races in the MotoAmerica series. They are basically a "Hypersport" street tire although the A-13 SP tires that are out now do have a little more edge grip. Everyone

If you run them without warmers set the front at 30psi and the rear at 28psi cold:

Takeoffs look like about $150.00 shipped from a KTM racer :

I second Bridgestone S20 EVO recommendation in 110/140 sizes. Stay away from 150 rear-tyre which tends to overwhelm front tyre at limit and causes front-end pushing & tucking.

Not quite as sticky as Alpha-13, but I think it's a better incremental step up from Sport Demons. They still have gentle breakaway behavior with wide range, making for easier control at limit. Easier to learn limits of cornering this way rather than stickier track-oriented tyres which have higher limits, but tends to break-away very suddenly. One moment you have traction, then the next none with seemingly little warning. The S20s aren't quite as fast as A-13, but are better behaved at limit.

Good deal here: http://www.americanmototire.com/cata...ath=33_82_1121

Looks like either the S20s or Alpha 13's are just the types of recommendations I was hoping for. Biggest limitation right now is the nut behind the handlebars so don't want to focus too much on tires. Just an incremental increase.

BTW, which track did you go to? My brother lives up there, I might make a road-trip and sign us both up for a track-day.

Portland International Raceway (PIR). Very nice track and relatively safe. By safe I mean most turns have quite a bit of run-off area before reaching any walls. ChampCar and American LeMans used to race here until the economy blew in 2008. Track day was run by MotoCorsa which is also the local Ducati dealer. That was their last track day for 2017. Most MotoCorsa instructors also race with OMRRA. I'm a member of OMRRA but just a corner-worker.

If you're anywhere near PIR tomorrow, the Dunop dealer is doing a sale on *new* Alpha 13 sets for $199. I've been using a set all year for track days and novice-level racing and have yet to exceed their limits. I'm just breaking into expert times, though. One of my pit buddies has been racing them all year without warmers and kicking my ass *shudder*. I'll probably switch to slicks in the spring, but I didn't want to have to adapt on the last race weekend of the year. Stop by pit 746 and say hello 😎.

There's Pirelli and Bridgestone dealers too. Might be able to find take-offs or clearance deals. OMRRA charges admission, but the website has a coupon you can print out and save $2 if you know a rider. Feel free to use 746.
