[motorcycle.com] - Moto Guzzi V7 III Series Coming for 2017

Piaggio has filed a trademark application for a new logo, suggesting a new line of Moto Guzzi V7 models is on the way. The trademark application, filed July 20 with the European Union Intellectual Property Office suggests Moto Guzzi is preparing a V7 III lineup, which we’ll likely see announced this fall at either Intermot or EICMA.

While the logo itself doesn’t offer many specifics, we can draw some reasonable conclusions. The current V7 II line was introduced in 2014 in three variants, the Racer, Special and Stone, with the Stornello scrambler joining the lineup last year. These models are unlikely to return as-is for 2017 however, as the V7 II platform does not comply with the new Euro 4 requirements that kick in at the end of 2016.

The obvious conclusion then, is Moto Guzzi will replace the entire lineup with a new Euro 4-compliant V7 III series. The new models will likely take some cues from the Moto Guzzi V9 Bobber and V9 Roamer which are Euro 4 compliant. The new logo suggests the V7 III will stay around the current line’s 744cc displacement instead of switching completely to the V9’s 853cc engine. We expect the V7 III engine will share some of the V9’s technology, including the loss of the antiquated Heron head design.

The previous V7 engine used a Heron head design that used a dished piston as the combustion chamber. The Euro 4-compliant V9 engine introduced a more modern hemi-head design which we expect to make its way to the V7 III.


What remains to be seen is how many different V7 III models there will be. As the newest member of the V7 family, the Stornello is likely to return. The Racer, Special and Stone may continue on, just as they did made the transition from the initial V7 series to V7 II, but it’s possible Moto Guzzi may introduce some cruiser-styled motorcycles to slot in under the V9 models.
