Dyna beads AND wheel weights? uhh what..?!

Okay so Saturday I finally got some fresh rubber on my bike, and I paid like $54 extra for dyna beads so I wouldn't have to have big tacky wheel weights (that tend to fly off, lost the first one I had on my rear) stuck to my rim. Today when I get home I realize there is 4 black squares stuck to my rear rim, and the front has a regular silver lead weight, which they so smartly put OVER my rim tape that is faded so I can't even take it off and replace it now... Too dang cold to bring it up to the shop and be like wtf is going on here, for all I know they didn't even put the beads in and have some bs excuse like "well you need to balance the wheel even with dyna beads" which you dont! Can I remove these weights by myself or what? I'm confused and angry this is the second time this shop has messed up my bike and the only reason I took it there a second time was because this was my Christmas present so I had no choice...

I'd leave the weights be. And get rid of the dyna beads. I use the stick on weights myself and then go over them with hot melt glue. Haven't lost one yet.

I'm not getting rid of the beads. I went with them so I wouldn't have to have wheel weights, I don't like weights. I also paid a ton of extra money for them, and I'd have to pay a ton of extra money to have them remove the beads then remount and rebalance my tires. Definitely not an option..

why not mount and balance the tires yourself and save your money? its easy. plus you don't have to go back and yell at yourself for not using dynabeads even though you paid for them... well... you might have to if you forget to use them... anyway... just do it yourself

Okay guess you missed the part where I said this was my Christmas present. Why would I do it myself when my tires + mounting/balancing is already paid for... not to mention I don't have the tools for it.

If you insist, you should take it back and make them do it the way you paid for. However, I think you should read this thread before you do that.

you could always take the wheel weights off and see if they actually put the beads in. have fun if they didn't. you can go to cyclegear to get free wheel weights so maybe go get some, take the old ones off, try it, if its unridable, put the new weights back on in the same configuration in the same spot, and take it back to the shop to complain. i mean there really isn't much else to do. they probably put the weights on to balance it and then put the beads in so that it stays balanced. i don't really see the point of the beads... they seem like an expensive way to be lazy. its not hard to get free weights take a wheel off and balance it really quick. plus its free.

Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've never balanced bike tires, and never had a problem. On my SuperHawk, ZX-10, 150+ MPH...nada a problem. I don't see noticing a difference with a balance tire as long as you buy a quality, name brand tire.

some rims are more out of balance than others.

Oh well lol I took it to the shop, the mechanic that worked on my bike wasn't there but the harley mechanic came out and popped all the weights off. She rides fine so far, except I kinda sorta crashed on my way home... might start a thread in the crash section for that :/ bike is out of commission

I had good results with the beads on my FZ6. Really, not to make you feel worse but 4 paks of beads are about $16 ( if my memory serves me....) and 4 is more than enough for our tires...at $54...the shop took advantage of you.

LOL I didn't crash because of the beads. My bike popped out of neutral in the driveway while still running before I had gotten off it, thus throwing me back, thus pulling the throttle back, thus flying into my house....

How did THAT happen? Did your boot/pants leg accidentally hit the shifter? Or did it just pop into gear by itself like some of the old Ford's used to do? Does the 500 have a positive neutral finder like the 250 does?

The beads are cheap, but $44 labor to remove the tires and put them in is cheap.

It popped into 1st all by itself... Maybe it didn't full engage into neutral. Clunkiest transmission in the world on the 500, otherwise a great bike. Yes it has a positive neutral finder, I kind of hate it lol. I think it was $45 for the front and $55 for the rear, there were also waste and shop fees and such, I guess the beads weren't $54 I just made a stupid math error because total was $135

one of many reasons i don't use neutral while the bike is on. ive hit false neutral below second before and it popped back into gear on my busted up fzr, but it just died cause i had the brake on. stopped using neutral after that.

They are beads that go inside the tire and balance it depending on the heavy and light parts

further correction: they are beads that people pay to have people put in their tires because of false marketing

They'd probably be OK for emergencies when you get a flat and have to change your tire out in the middle of the desert and don't have any weights. But I simply don't see the point any other way. I use the black weights that look just like the rim. You have to look twice to find them.

Fluorescent green? And you're worried about the looks of wheel weights?

Maybe put this stuff on your rims.

Alex has a good point there... I had black wheel weights on my rear on the inside of the rim which I was okay with, but the front one had a silver one on the side that was stuck on on top of my ghetto rim tape I'm in the process of replacing (repairing my fairings comes first :/) and I didn't see the point of having weights and beads, when I paid extra for the beads so I wouldn't need weights lol. where would I come up with these? link? I have no idea what to search for.
See if this link will work.

The only thing is that if you powder coat, then you should probably make sure you are buying the steel kind instead of the lead kind. The powder coating temps may cause the lead to melt.

BTW, powder coating aluminum?? I guess you know that you need a special powder coat that cures at a lower temp than regular powder coat. If you cure at the normal temp, you'll ruin the temper in the aluminum. Not sure if this applies to die cast aluminum rims, but I wouldn't want to take the chance if it was me.
