New user 1989 ninja 600r

Hi all,

New user to the forums here I was recently gifted a 1989 ninja 600r project bike and I’ve been in the process of stripping it down and cleaning it all up with the hopes of getting it running once I’m done. The engine wasn’t seized and I’m told it ‘used’ to run.

Anyway here’s some pictures so far trying to keep the investment low for now until I figure out if she’ll run again, elbow grease is free! Any tips tricks advice, comments is appreciated I’m new to this.

Looks like you've got some work ahead of you. You may get some advice, but this site is primarily for the Ninja 250's-300's-and possibly the new 400's.

I had seen that a few other folks completed significant rework of similar bikes and posted on these forums which I why’s I did also.

Thanks for the welcome!

One thing I never do is dissemble a bike until I have it running. Maybe the tires are toast, but I want to hear it run, and maybe take a short run at low speeds through the gears.
You have spend a shat load of time taking it apart and even longer to get it back to a condition where you may try to start it. To me just wasted time. First run, then dissemble to correct issues.

Not sure what I would do with your pile of parts.

I do wish you all the best and have fun as you rebuild. I would try to make sure it runs before I spend a dime on other parts.

Since the motor is out take it to a machine shop for a rebuild. You'll probably only have to drop maybe $600 which is not bad. You can probably have you fairings re-painted for a couple hundred bucks.

You seem to have adequate space to work on your bike, you should be fine. I did a resto many years ago on a 80's FZR600...beautiful bike the original fairings were in top shape. I spent about $2k buying little parts here and there, new tires, brakes, chain, and of course engine overhaul. In the end well worth the money. I love late 80's to mid 90's bikes.

Nothing wrong with pulling it apart before start up, quite opposite IMO.

Having a good look with the heads off and the ability to easily clean out all the crud that may be in there is a safe route.

Plus parts aren't that expensive and the return is always welcome.

Seeing though its been sitting for a while you will also get a good idea on all the rubber bits and peices that are now kaput.

Have you got a time line and budget, or are you just going to wing it?

Keep the updates and pics coming, remember to not lose to many nuts and bolts.
