sonic fork springs

Just got mine in the mail today. I was wondering if the preload inserts are necessary? I'm curious what effect it has on the ride? I weigh 215 and trying out the .85 springs w 15w oil

Congrats on your upgrade. Yes the insert is required, unless you magically got a spring that is the exact length required. It is more likely you will want to use the insert, but cut it down so that the fork cap sits above the fork about half an inch, when measured at the oring vs oring groove with the fork fully extended. You can also measure the length of your stock spring and make the total length of your spacer plus sonic spring equal to that. If you have a valve emulator make sure you take that into account and make the spacer shorter.

Without the insert, and assuming your sonic springs were shorter than the stock springs like mine were, your suspension would need to compress the entire air gap before it would have any spring tension. For me that would have been more than 6 inches of extra sag.

How were the springs? I am considering this upgrade since my front end hasn't been quite right since I upgraded my rear shock with one from the 300r. I was considering just going with heavier oil and seeing how that goes first. Maybe readjust my rear shock back down from 4 to 3 or 2.

Spacers are to set sag with, which is extremely important to do.

personally save your money cut & space out the OEM springs afterwards. I've done this many times before, including my 500 & 250 both.

I would use them, but you could talk to Rick at Sonic Springs for expert advice.

Did you use their spring-rate calculator? .85 seems too light. 15W seems right though.
