moving......again

OK, I knew this day was coming but really didn't want it too. I was told today that I will be leaving socal and going to Boone Iowa on or around 10 Dec. My last day at work here will be the 3rd. After about 2 months or so in Iowa, I will be going to Alaska for about 6 months or so. So I will bid a fond farewell to the warmth and sunshine of socal for the weather in the midwest and the frozen lands of Anchorage. I have really loved riding the canyons in socal, those are so much fun, and running naked on the beach, (don't ask). So now I will join those who put their bikes to bed for the winter hibernation and recall the rides of the past summer and dream of the rides to come in the following spring.

I'm retired from the Army and I currently work for a contractor that installs upgrades on Army helicopters. Once the aircraft in one location are up to date we have to move to another site. Which makes it really difficult on family life. My wife and daughter are in Hawaii.

Oh I wish, I'm still holding out to return to the islands late summer or early fall of next year. I have been getting word that the permanent contractor positions at Wheeler are going to me converted to Government jobs and I am holding out for that possibility. I will probably be getting a car both in Boone and Anchorage. My bike is going to be staying with Kjohnson21 and Manicavies while I am gone. If I take it, I will have to store it somewhere, this way I know that it is safe and out of the weather.

Chris, Good Luck to you. Iowa is certainly different--but you will like Alaska. It is beautiful unspoiled country. Besides, you can visit Sarah Palin. Also , Thanks for keeping our helicopters current. I would suspect that they are a high maintenance item.

I ran out of perdiem 2 weeks ago, and supporting 2 households without it is impossible. It was either accept it or stay here without beer. Sorry, but that is not an option. Hopefully I will be able to go back to the islands next fall, that is what I am aiming for.

Chris, You are A-OK in my book. I am certain you will make the best out of the situation. Don`t know much about Iowa--rode through it a couple of times, But Alaska, that`s another story. I think that you will really like it--not just for its incredible beauty, but also for its incredible people.

Growing up in the deep South, I had heard that everybody in Calif. were freaks, hippies and weirdos. I have met some wonderful people here, and I kinda wish that I could find something permanent here. But that is a toss up, as I also love Hawaii. Hopefully I will get to go a few places like I have here.

I have also joined the rest of the connected youth oriented world and have a page (or something like that) on Facebook. Several people that have met here and my daughter have requested that I get one. So I finally listened to my daughter and got one.

OK, to all my fellow riders in socal, I bid you a fond farewell as I fly on sunday to Iowa, where it will be roughly 27 degrees with a 70% chance of snow. Next week promises to be rather fun as it is not predicted to be above freezing the entire week. I'm starting to wonder about kkim's question, who DID I piss off. Anywho, I have really enjoyed my stay in socal, I have met some wonderful people and made friends with most of them. Diablo250 and Ken, I had a blast on PCH. To the riders that I rode ACH with, thanks that was a blast, I just wished I could have kept up with you guys and remembered who you all were right now. And finally to Kjohnson21 and Manycavies, thanks for the fantastic time that I have had here. They are fantastic people and if any of you are ever in this area, look them up. I have rode from Ojai in the North to the Hale observatory on Palomar mn. From PCH to the high desert of the Apple Valley and loved every minute of it. I have also done a few things that this forum is not dedicated too so I will not mention them. I fell in love with this place and would move here it the chance presented itself. There is so much to do here and never enough time to do it. To all the ninjetters in Iowa, look out, the Brewer is on his way.

Thanks guys. Arrived in Des Moines safe and cold. Got dripped on by condensation when we took off from Santa Ana airport. The little crop duster with a jet engine we flew on up to Des Moines was ok, just tiny. On approach into Des Moines, I looked out the window and come to the conclusion that I can't live here, the roads are entirely too straight. We had a 50 mile drive up to Boone and it started snowing on us as we pulled through a Mickey D's, within minutes it was really coming down. By the time we got to the place we are staying for a while there was probably an inch or so on the ground. 2" possible tonight, and 8-12 Tues night/Wed morn. I miss Hawaii, California and my bike. You folks that we have made fun of because we are able to ride year 'round, now I feel the pain. really don't know how long I will be away from 'lil blue. Well time for another beer.

Hey nb welcome to my part of the country

Sorry you had to relocate again but as you said you need to go where the job is.

If you get a long weekend and want to run over to Lincoln we can always grab a beer someplace. But don't ask me why you would want to drive for 240 miles in four hours on arrow straight highways to do that.

glad you made it safe chris. well, if the roads are all snow and iced, then i guess it is good that they are straight. less chance to skid off the side at the turns i suppose.

the waves were supposed to be like 30-50 feet today. i heard that the north shore was jammed packed with people wanting to see the surf competition. i think they postponed it though.

anyways, hang in there.

Are you talking about the Eddie Akua (sp) contest? I thought that was the minimum wave height for that? I would have loved to see those waves.

yeah, the eddie aikau. oh, yeah so they didn't compete today, but some still went out to surf. here is a pic:

they are going to try again tomorrow. it was too inconsistent today.

is there any good snow skiing areas in ohio? maybe you can do some snow boarding if they do. if i were you, i would at least try snow mobiling or something like that. gotta take advantage of the snow.

Chris,
Good luck. A friend of mine, whose father used to teach the MSF and does a lot of motorcycle machine work is an avid rider and went on a 3 week tour of Alaska last summer by motorcycle.

I travel to Iowa on business about once a month. In fact I have to go there next week. Last time I checked it was 10F

The weather there gets severe but I feel people are lot nicer(generally speaking compared to in LA). I like West Des Moines. Nice clean town. I believe Boone was very close.

I usually have to drive all over the state and yes the roads are very straight. Few years ago I had to make 3 hour trip from Des Moines to south east part of the state with basically only one left turn in entire trip. Well, I missed that turn and I was about 20 miles into Missouri when I realized

Good luck and stay safe!

It would be nice to meet someone else on the forum. As it stands at the moment, I will be leaving the area on Christmas eve, and getting to Alaska on New Years eve. Today wasn't too bad, the wind was calm, the skies were clear and the sun was beautiful shining off the snow. I think the high was 9. I had never been to Iowa before and I would like to have had the chance to travel around and meet some of the locals.

AAahhh, yes. I have no idea when I will be leaving. It would be nice to be there during the summer, I have heard that it is beautiful there. The rumours that I have heard are Anchorage till April, then Fairbanks. That is one place that I don't want to go to during winter.

As for leaving everyone hanging......................................................................... ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ ................................................................................ .............................................
