chain replacement

Links contained in threads (2) appear to be expired.
Simple question :
facing the chain, master link at botom:
should the opening in the clip face forward or rear
or
should the opening in the link be in the same direction the chain travels or opposite travel
thanks

On the top of the chain, as it is moving forward, the open part should be facing toward the back. Way to remember it is it's oriented like a fish.

I never thought of the fish picture to describe the master link. That works. I generally think of it as an arrow pointing forward like you would with your tire rotation. either way, I also like to dab atv silicone over the master link plate for quick inspection of tightness/placement before a ride.
