Starting problems
So, having a few problems with my EX 250F
Had it running a week after I bought it, with the help of fresh petrol, a new battery and a little bit of a Nulon spray called 'Start Ya Bastard' Ran a little rough, idled nicely after about five minutes though, and revved right up to 14k rpm really well. Since then though, I've pulled out the carbies and gave them a clean, replaced the engine intake boots. Unfortunately, it took me a few weeks to get it back together and now I can't get it started. Any ideas? |

You getting fuel and spark?
I can't diagnose the problem without more info :/ Things usually run a bit rough at first when you start them on the spray.

Getting both fuel and spark. Just drained the carbies to check for water because the fuel tank has been sitting for a while, but it was fine

It turns over but won't crank?
You sure the fuel is getting to the combustion chamber? All it takes is fuel, spark, an combustion an things work like magic... Something ain't doing right Is it flooded? If no... Squirt it again, see what happens

I'd put on full choke, and crank for a max of 10 seconds at a time with 10 seconds between attempts.
As soon as you get a sputter, back the choke off a bit. Once it's going set the choke to keep the revs about 2000 to 2500. Turn it off completely as soon as it will idle without dying. Did you remove the caps and set the idle mixture screws to 2.5 turns out? |

So found a moment of reprieve from the rain to give the bike another look over (Perth weather is pretty bad at the moment). Turns out the problem was simply a leaking petcock and a half-flat battery. Letting everything drain for a bit while I charged the battery fixed everything.
Barely cranked at all before coming to life. Just need to adjust the idle and throttle cables |

For a leaking petcock to cause trouble, something else has to also be leaking, like the carburetor float valves.
Replacing the little O-ring on the petcock's valve plunger stopped mine from leaking. They're an industrial size 007 Viton O-ring, available from industrial suppliers. McMaster-Carr is one. |

Could easily be the float valves, I didn't check them too well. Starts first time, every time now, but starts revving despite no throttle being applied. Cables are tight though, so I will adjust those as well as while I'm poking around

So, finally ripped the carbs out again. Checked the float bowls, sorted out the idle adjust screws, gave the petcock a look over. Put it all back together and now we have this:
