Common Problems with Ninja 250r
Hi Everyone,
I'm new to this forum. I currently own a honda cbr. I am looking into a first motorcycle for my girlfriend. She really likes the Ninja 250r (me too, from what I've seen its a mean little machine). So my question is to you guys, Is there any common problems I should be aware of when looking at used 250Rs? I am going tomorrow to check out an 06 with about 2000 miles on it. Outside the normal wear and tear, is there anything specific I should ask the seller? Thanks in advance. |

Just check for common things on a bike when you buy used.
The first link is general info on the 250, and the second is service schedule. You can go down the list as you check the bike. http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/New_Riders http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Service_Schedule Edit: Check to see if it has modifications, if it does ask if it has been properly jetted. I see you said the bike only has 2000 miles. Ask if the bike has been properly broken in? Also, it is crucial that the Valves been adjusted! They should have been when the bike was broken in. |

Whats the harm if they haven't been adjusted at 500 miles? Is it too late to do it now? Is the damage already done if they haven't been adjusted?
It sounds like there is nothing special I should look for in the 250R aside from typical things when buying used. EDIT: Another thing; I've ridden a 500R once, and the fairings rattled like it was their job. Is this typical or perhaps there was some loose bolts on that bike? |

Rattles aren't normal on the 250, at least not the pregens I'm familiar with. The only time mine rattled was when something was improperly loose. Main issues to look out for stem from neglect and improper storage. Carbs get gummy, plugs need changing, tires dryrot, chain ignored, sludge in the tank, that sort of thing. Before starting, make sure it has fresh gas and has a good oil level. Check for binding in the throttle cable and for fraying at the top end of the clutch cable. Damage from drops can be fairly expensive to repair as undamaged fairings are hideously expensive and have been for a while. Look inside the tank for rust. If it's been stored outside pull the seat and check for wasp nests.

Carbs!! Thank you, I knew I was forgetting something. I've been riding fuel injected bikes for a while now.

Well, finessing the choke really takes some time to learn. Make sure you brief her on using it. Otherwise, if she bogs the throttle taking off from wither too much or not enough choke, it could cause her to make a mistake. Also, as long as the bike runs and you take it for a ride, it should be fine for the most part.

So, I picked up the 06 250R. I was wrong about the mileage, there are 7000 miles on it. I think I like seeing that number better than 2000. At least I know it was used, rather than just sitting in someones garage for 5 years.
The bike is very clean, looks very nice. Its black with gray accents. I feel like it has a little hesitation at the low end. It could be that I'm just used to my 600, but I think it could be smoother. I haven't yet looked at a typical power curve for these bikes, but under 5k rpm feels sluggish, above that and you can tell the bike wants to move. I'm going to give it a typical tune-up. Clean the air filter, change the oil, clean the plugs(the PO ran only 93 or higher, I'm expecting some carbon build up on the plugs), clean/sync the carbs, etc... All in all, it seems like a nice bike. I'm hoping she will be putting her first miles on it this weekend. |

make sure the valves have been adjusted/checked. you're due.
clean the carbs and when doing so, shim the needles... it will make the power delivery down low a lot smoother. |

checking the valves wasn't an issue with 2k miles but with 7k former owner really didn't give a s**t i guess. you can adjust the clutch lever to where you want the friction zone, and the pre-gens were made to rev up and keep revved up, that was a complaint about them. just rev the bike up KNOWING it loves it before taking off and you won't have anything near a bog down again. the bike bike loves running at 9k rpm+, all day long. 11k rpm @ 90 mph is it's "zone" great luck, hope you can keep up with her when she's an experienced ninja 250 rider, happy trails.
