DOS on server
Hi all -
Apologies if the server has been flaky the past few days. For some reason, a bot has decided to visit various posts and blog pages here 100's of thousands of times a day. Considering that we have a few dozen active users here, it's a big change. If you look at the bottom of the page, you'll see the metrics of the visitors, and today this site hit a new high. This automated activity is filling up the session table, and slowing/crashing things as it recovers over time. They are coming from all different IPs, and are not easy to just block - as they are also targeting the non-stock, but well-known, mods on this site. In all likelihood, this will stop on its own in a few days, but we'll have to see.

Thank you Alex. I haven't noticed anything odd from my end. You have to wonder what can be gained by this. Practice for bigger things maybe?

Many (most?) were coming from an IP range that corresponds to Hong Kong. For the moment I have banned that entire IP range. Of course there are probably some valid users from there - but I'll see if this slows it down for now.

Looks like whatever was going on, continued to keep going on full force until April 8 - but at that point it stopped completely, and hasn't been happening the past few days.
