Is This Engine Noise Normal for 250?

Hello

First and foremost, please know I am quite a novice at all of this mechanical stuff. I have owned this 2006 Ninja 250 for about 2 years and to be honest, put it through some hell (rode all through PA winter). But, I do try to keep up on covering it, lubing the chain, changing the oil, etc.

So..the problem. The level of noise from the engine has always been somewhat loud...and I figured that's just how 250s are. But more and more I've been getting irritated on why mine sounds so loud and other bikes sound..well..quiet. I've tried to do some research...maybe valve adjustment? bad/dirty carbs? I really don't know and hoping someone will be able to tell me by the video what they think it may be. I know you can only give a guess because its a video, but any hints/ideas would be appreciated.

In the video attached below, I show you the sound of the engine fully warmed up, idle about 1,500 and revving it to about 3k or so. May not sound terribly loud in the video, but I assure you...it is much louder than any other bikes like mine. Why? Other bikes I hear a more....clean sounding, sporty, quieter sound.

This is pretty vague information. so Please feel free to ask questions to help diagnose.

Thanks so much in advance.

What exhausts do you have on the bike?

Why would the slip on exhaust make the loud noise in the engine?

The exhaust is probably the largest factor in what a bike sounds like. Two Brothers is one of the loudest, most annoying slipons available for the 250.

You can always post up a note in the Items Wanted section here to let people know you're looking for them. It's probably not cost-effective (see: very expensive) to buy original new ones, but with any luck you can track down a used set that people don't need for one reason or another.

I see you are from the Pittsburgh area. Check craigslist as I saw someone in the North Hills parting out a 250, just reposted today. You might get a good deal on a stock exhaust if they still hsve them.

This is an old thread so I hope someone sees this but, my ninja sounds like the one in the video BUT I have stock exhaust and it didn’t always sounds that loud. It used to sound like a big sewing machine and now it’s more… throaty? I haven’t changed anything since it started sounding this way. Someone else did borrow it for a night and I noticed it right after, but they didn’t do anything to it as far as I know.

Looking at the rear end of the mufflers, do you see four rivets around the openings, or four holes?

Welcome to the board, Alexis!
