DRAMA during thedebut Sepang round in the World Superbike Championship as Aprilia team-mates Marco Melandri and Sylvain Guintoli went head to head after dodging the first lap incident.

Unfortunately for the Kawasaki Team, Loris Baz came in contact with his team-mate Tom Sykes causing them both to crash with Sykes then collecting Voltcom Crescent Suzuki’s Alex Lowes as his leg became lodged between the Suzuki’s rear wheel and seat. All riders walked away, but were unable to restart the race.

As the incident wiped out three possible front-runners, it allowed Guintoli and Melandri to fill the gap and control the race right through until the chequered flag with Melandri claiming his first ever win with Aprilia six rounds into the 2014 Championship.

Despite first lap disappointment as Lowes was taken down, Voltcom Crescent Suzuki’s Eugene Laverty fought to finish third on the podium with Ducati’s Chaz Davies and Aprilia’s Toni Elias who finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Jonathan Rea finished race one in Malaysia 2.789s ahead of his team-mate Leon Haslam in sixth and seventh despite the Manx resident having a poor start.
