Has anyone done a starter motor change? (Update: I changed it out)
As in title. Mine isn't cranking (have to clutch start all the damned time!) and I have a starter motor from a '11 model to fit to my '08.
From what I can see it's held in place with 2 bolts. Should just be a matter of undoing those and the cable to the solenoid. If anyone here has removed their starter motor please let me know if you ran into any trouble getting it off or back on. Thanks. Last futzed with by Linkin; December 26th, 2014 at 09:29 PM. |

Starters normally take a little extra effort to get them back in the hole. I suggest cleaning the o-rings on the end of the starter and then putting a nice thin layer of grease on them to help it sit right back in.
Also I have had issues when installing a starter and it just wont budge.... sometimes the teeth are lined directly up with the starter clutch gear that it wont fall into place, if that happens just pull it back out and with your hands turn the gear on the starter a little and try again. Patience is always the key when working on motorcycles :-) |

Definitly clean the area with compressed air. Dirt and rocks settle under the starter. When you remove the bolts the starter needs to move toward the right side of the bike befor moving up at all. The rocks can hold it in place.
Also once the starter is out the hole is right there leading to the inside of the engine. That is one place you don't want rocks to fall into. Did you try jumping the starter solinoid?

Today has been a productive day. I've replaced the starter motor with a new one. The old one is well and truly cactus, I'd say. It doesn't feel anything like the new one when hand turning. The new one also doesn't spin/crank when you cut the ignition, the old one did. Free spinning or something.
It took me 3 hours to do the work. Real bastard of a spot! Hmmm.... bastard motor!? There was lots of crap underneath the starter because I park outside...  Also had to take this thing on the left off to actually remove the starter

You need to reset that cam chain tensioner as your putting it in!
Look up how to reset it because you will ruin something if you simply try to put it back in as it is right now!

I use a flathead screw driver from a glasses repair kit. It's the only thing that seems to fit.

Ummm... CCT went back in fine, I didn't mess with the middle screw. Bike runs fine

I did RTFM regarding the CCT though, I know how to put it back in and keep the timing
