DIY Tank Grips
So I'm too cheap to buy Stomp Grips so I decided to make my own.
Pretty simple. I used Contact shelf liner to make a shape/stencil and carefully stuck it to the side panel. Once I was happy with the placement of the stencil I spread a layer of black silicone with the folded wax paper from the contact sheets like a putty knife. It was tricky spreading it out and making sure it's not too thick but not too thin. Now it's up to you what you want to do with it. I wanted a rubber texture so what I did was dip a sponge brush into a little kerosene and smoothed out the ridges and then used the same brush and did this dabbing motion to give it a rough bumpy look. All-in-all it cost me under $20 with supplies to make probably 10 of them. $6 black Silicone II (GE brand) $5 clear Contact shelf liner $0.50 sponge brush $7ish kerosene (mineral spirits would probably work) I had everything except silicone already for other stuff so I can see this as a $6 addon. Or if your not particular about the color, you could use any silicone you have in your house that you used for your kitchen. What do you all think? The stencil probably could be better but I was going for simple and I'm not that artistic. If someone could come up with a better stencil, I might try again. Silicone comes off pretty cleanly and I'm liking the grippy nature of it so far. It's raining so I'll have to see how well it works tomorrow. |
