Once someone has done something silly in your path, the focus needs to be on what you're going to do to control the bike. Brake, swerve, or even accelerate; that choice needs to happen immediately and be well under control before you worry about using the horn. It's just wasted time and energy that can be used to try and save yourself instead of just expressing your annoyance with the situation.

He probably didn't see you, and I'm sure the rain didn't help in that regard. When you damaged his mirror, you're lucky he didn't make you a greasy spot in the road. Some other drivers would have.

We all make mistakes. His was in not paying better attention to oncoming traffic (you), and you acted like an idiot seeking revenge for an accident that never actually happened. Seems like only your sense of pride was hurt. Since you attributed your deliverance to God, maybe you should read Proverbs 16:18 for more guidance.

100% agree. I tend to have road rage when I'm driving but never on the bike. You don't have time to worry about the guy that just cut you off or flipping off someone. All the focus should be on riding your own ride and keeping alert for the next obstacle.

On a side note, maybe slow down a little next time.....not saying that it's your fault at all but if it's raining like crazy like you described, it might not be the best time to ride faster than the speed limit.

reponding.

flitecontrol - Yes I am lucky, but adrenaline runs high here so I now regret what I did out of anger even though I am not an angry person at all. Now my whole reference to God is more on an admirable point of view that I don't want to discuss, because my beliefs are far less complicated than religion and too simple to make any sense to most, but you are right in that my actions were not the right thing to do.

Alex: I saw him coming at a high speed just before he swerved in, which is why I honked to try and stall him before he cut me off, but obviously he didn't hear me and my first instinct was to swerve, but you are right sir.

BlownWideOpen: Now you're summary is on point technically, but I am not a man of religion or a man of belief in a higher power, God to me is luck and I'd like to believe there is something out there I can blame for when good things come my way, I don't practice anything and don't believe in anything but living life to the fullest, too simple to actually explain man.

Good thing you're okay. I probably would have done the same thing in the heat of the moment. But also, I wouldn't have put myself in that position by going those speeds in crazy raining conditions.

you guys are all making great points, one thing I would like to clarify for some reasoning on my speed because I know it was a bit excessive I have my 2000 dollar Asus laptop in my backpack, and yes I had a trashbag around but it was pouring and I wanted to arrive in my office asap.

I would have to look up the actual time breakdown but speeding only saves you a couple minutes realy. Not enough to take a chance in bad conditions IMO.

Stay safe out there!

The reason for my speeding was not only to arrive quickly but to not allow too much rain to fall directly on my backside, the faster I went the less rain fell on my backpack which is what worried me, but next time I'll just super wrap it and slow down.

you mean punch and run, and apparently you should have been in that car, I said it was an adrenaline reaction the guy was careless, and I should have shown more compassion either way what's done is done, and you can call the cops if you want, I have a couple of biker friends in there that would love to hear this story.

It probably wasn't the smartest thing that you've ever done but I understand why you did it. Take it slow in the rain and get a waterproof bookbag cover. They're on Amazon for like $10.

Glad you didn't end up wrecking your bike while going after that guy. Usually rider vs car ends badly.

Glad you're ok.

But whatever you want to call it... it's still a crime and not something to be proud of. Ripping into someone for making a mistake is one thing and (hopefully) enough to make them think twice. Ripping up their property only makes them angry to the point that they'll probably forget all about their mistake. It also gives all of us a bad rep.

And if you're speeding, you're the one that needs to be aware of the situation and on the lookout for hazards. Cagers are terrible at estimating our speed, let alone in "crazy" rain. If you're going to ride in the rain, get a proper rain cover or laptop bag and ride safe (e.g. http://www.amazon.com/High-Sierra-Ac.../dp/B000H85NOS)

If you were close enough to punch his mirror off after he almost just merged into you without seeing you, then you sir have a death wish.

First thing would have been to slow down, drive defensively, move away from the driver not paying attention, then go on with your day.

I know it sounds like we're being a broken record, but there is a reason.

Sitting back now and looking at it and acknowledging you didn't react appropriately is the first step. Yay!

As you continue riding, you will have numerous folks pull out in front of you, cut you off, or be a general moron on the road. Take this lesson now and realize it is going to happen and there is nothing you can do that will change their behavior.

The only thing you can change is your behavior. Are you going to get so mad you aren't thinking every time? Or are you going to take this lesson, chalk it up to a learning moment, and retrain yourself to react with a clear head?

Please make this the only time you have such a story. If your temper gets the better of you each time something happens on the road that is beyond your control, you will not last long on the road. Be proactive, realize they will do whatever they want to do, and be calm enough to either stay ahead of their actions or smooth enough to respond quickly and safely for everyone.

Glad this tale wasn't worse and that you are here today to tell us about it.

Glad your OK, you did what most of us want to do but don't. Some of us just have a little more control.

Wow, I am so late to the party.. so what happened? What does "ji" stand for in some obscure alien language? i could figure out next to nothing:

A gent was riding a motorbike to the office in the rain, at a brisk rate of speed. The speed was needed to get to the office sooner, as well as to protect his $2K Asus laptop from the rain by the virtue of creating strong turbulent airflow around his backpack, to divert the raindrops from their intended path.

Another gent, of absent-minded nature, materialized from a parallel universe on the same roadway, in some sort of a pickup truck, and performed a brisk maneuver, known colloquially as "cutting off", which was bound to cause material damage and body injury to the rider and his machine. The rider tried to alert the absent minded driver to his presence, by activating his feeble horn, to no avail. The rider then took evasive action by a tad of swerving, braking, sliding, and a waterfall of emergency communication with his deity of choice. As result, the rider was able to avoid contact with the above truck or the truck's tires, with a whole inch to spare. Consecutively, the rider proceeded to remove glass from the truck's window, raise his finger to heaven, and to cordially advise the absent minded driver that he (the rider) got on that particular roadway, in the rain, for the purposes of short business trip, and not with intentions of an elaborate journey into the afterlife.

The driver acquiesced, and both gents parted into their own universes, presumably one wiser and the other one more religious and wishful for more tangible means of communication.

Wow, sounds like fun. Around here, this kind of fun happens almost daily... well, except for the rain part.
