DMV I hate you with a passion

So.. Ordered my new plates for my car so I didn't have to pay an outrageous fee to have a organization plate this year. Ordered it on Monday, came on Friday. Sweet. I ordered tags for my bike. Tags, not a new plate on Wednesday. Still not here... My plates expired Sunday -_- so now I'm just hoping the police don't see it and write me a ticket or tow it... Gah... DMV wtf man

Print-out a receipt or confirmation and keep it with you until the sticker arrives.

I wouldn't think they would tow it just because the registration is expired, but they might write you a violation.

I got a $60 "ticket" one time for having an expired Village sticker (required by the town where I lived in the Chicago area) while inside shopping at Home Depot a block from my house.

Also got stopped by the local PD for not having a front plate. Almost got in trouble on that one when I laughed at him and told him he had better things to do than stop me for that...

Haha, I lost my back plate coming home from NYST the last time. Switched front to back and ordered a new one. Still running with one plate and no issues yet.

In Ohio they tell you if you are going to order to do it 60-30 days in advance. I order 2 year for the car and 1 each for the bike 2 months before I need them. Or I go to my local BMV.

The thing I hate about RI DMV is if you're trying to register something from out of state they require you to get a VIN check from the police. So I go to the police station for my Aprilia to get a check and they're like "we need the bike here so we can look at it with the title." I inform them that I can't register it or get a plate on it until the DMV has the form from THEM and they told me to just ride it down anyway. I had the Lieutenant come out and asked him that if I get in an accident from my house to the police station, would he personally guarantee that I wouldn't get in trouble for riding the bike there without a plate? He was like, "I'll send someone to your house to take a look at it."

I love when the police tell me to do something illegal, then they usually say" I'd never tell you to do that, pay your ticket like a good little slave " fun fun fun

In Indiana they say you will receive it with in 14 days. But I never had a problem ordering last minute

Fourteen days, that's actually not bad. I always allow a lot of time when dealing with them because you just never know.

We don't even get our renewal notices until about a month before they expire. I want to say you're not even allowed to do it until it's within 60 days.

MI makes their plates in the prisons.

Probably. I know for a fact MI does though. My dad retired from a prison guard position, my mom does accounting for the state, and I programmed radios for one of the local prisons when they built it. "One of", because there are 6.

The urban legend when Walmart built here is that they looked at the town's population to make their decision, and didn't realize that most of the number consisted of inmates.

Me too, because in MI it defaults to your birthday (same as when your license expires). However, I need info from the form they send me in order to actually process the renewal.

You MIGHT be able to go to a SoS office 60 days early and have them renew it. But I've only had experience with that while taking care of something else, so I don't know if you can just request to renew it with no other changes. I assume so, but I've never wanted to try it (specifically the part about waiting in line for an hour).

Or you can just wait until the notice gets mailed to you, type in the details and your credit card number on the website, and get your new plate/tabs in the mail in a week or two. Being the anti-social computer geek I am, this method is much more my style.

Use a calendar app on your mobile phone. I use Jorte for Android, but even the stock calendar app will probably suffice.

They can't do licenses, but AAA can do DMV paperwork for vehicles (at least here in CA). That's sometimes helpful.
