Quick fix for the "chirping" or "squeaking" front wheel

Had the chirping or squeaking issue suddenly occur on my '09 at 1,000 miles.

Did a search on this site, seems like a common problem.

For example, I think this is the same issue (although I'm not sure, I can't hear his that clearly in the video).

Basically, there's a "chirp" or "squeak" that is rotational, i.e., it occurs once per rotation. So it varies with speed. Seems to go away below 10 mph and above 40 mph or so.

Putting the brakes on has no effect on the noise.

To fix, I did the following (all done with the bike on the kickstand. no other stand necessary).

1. Unbolt front axle. Easy to do, just take the cotter pin out and unbolt. Mine was tight, but not horribly so. I can't really estimate the torque it was at.

2. Disconnect the speedo cable, shoved some grease up into the gears the best I could through the opening (not much went in).

3. With a mallet, knocked the axle out about an inch. The purpose of this was to reposition things a bit.

4. Torqued the axle to 65 ft/lbs, but cotter back, connect speedo cable.

Noise went away!
