 n00b alert!!!! Battery is dead

So yesterday after an intense ride (use the word intense loosely) I tried to pull into the garage, but my wife beat me to the punch. Soo I cut off the engine, put down the kick stand and go get her keys to move the car. I then wheel the bike in, then move her car in.....all is good??? not quite. You see I left the bike in the "on" position and thus havea dead battery today. My question is, is it alright to use a car to jump the battery?? Or do I need a new battery now?? Thanks guys.

you can use the car battery, just don't start the car when you jump it, like you normally do when you jump another car.

that's why I always use the key to turn off the bike.

So should I start the car, connect the terminals, then start the bike. OR leave the car off connect th terminals then start the bike. Also how long should I let the motorcycle engine run before shutting it off??

Michael - Leave the car off. The voltage/power in the car battery by itself is all you need. Providing your alternator and battery were good to start with once you have the bike running take a nice long ride and the Alternator should get the battery back up to shape. Short rides will not do the trick. This is one time you can honestly tell your wife you have to take a long ride .

Look around for the battery tenders - you can find them for ~$20 on sale and they will be good to keep your battery charged during the off season - oh wait your in HI and don't have an off season (turkey) or could charge the battery up overnight when this happens.

The higher amperage for the car battery along with the flow from the alternator could cook the bikes battery and/or other electrical equipment on the bike.
