2008 Engine knock at startup

Today I went to start my bike since it was 70 degrees here in Kentucky. Upon hitting the starter button the bike sounded like the engine was seized. I thought this was impossible because I was just riding it about 5 days ago and it was fine. So I rolled it back and forth and tried it again. Same thing only this time it was turning the engine over except that was a terrible knocking sound. I was thinking GREAT there goes my engine. So I left it as I went to class for the day, came back and thought "what the hell. Lets see what happens" I put my key in, press the button and it starts right up no knock or anything. Amazed, I finished eating my taco johns and went to try it again. Started right back up. However, I noticed a loud knock when I first pressed the starter button. The bike now starts and runs perfect, but I think the problem is with the starter. Is that a possibility that the starter can make that type of noise. I know when the battery is low it will click, but this makes a terrible sound and I am hoping its the starter and not the top end of the engine.

Any suggestions as to if that is true. I looked on the web but I cannot find anything saying the starter can knock.

Poor fuel quality, bad plugs, a misfire caused by a faulty IC ignitor could possibly cause the engine to knock at start up.
