To stabilize, or not to stabilize, that is the question

Hi,

So winter is coming...
And since this is my first winter as a biker, I'm pretty confused about it.

The bike is at safe place, prepared for winter sleep, except one thing:

Fuel Stabilizer

The question maybe not relevant for you U.S. citizens (honestly I don't know heck about your fuel quality), so my question is mainly for EU or neighbor country riders.

I was told If I fill up my tank with 100 octane fuel, then I don't need to add fuel stabilizer, since it contains less ethanol, and it's not going gooey that fast.

Any experience, or should I just go for it, and add the FS anyway.

(My baby is FI)

Thank you for any input!

My says drain the tank, remove it, coat the inside with motor oil and it's good.

Add the fuel stabilizer. People have been adding it for years even when there wasn’t any ethanol in fuel. Any fuel, including diesel will go bad after a while.

Use the marine formula stabilizer. Add it to the tanks and run the bike a while then drain the carbs using the little screw on the bottom of the bowl. I also change the oil and brake fluid. But I live in Iowa and it’s a long winter. Fuel injected scooter gets nothing.

Thank you for the answers.

I'll just add the stabilizer. Better safe, than sorry.

the bees knees right here, very good results. With "vapor technology".....whoa, no huffin' this stuff!

I choose to use a 1/2 oz shot with every tankful during riding season. Not only a stabilizer, its a year round (hence the 360) "ethanol treatment, cleaner", blah blah blah.
On the ethanol basis alone justifies year round use. Our fuel here "drops out" in an alarmingly short period.

Stabil brand widely available in USA, but dunno if its offered or available in Budapest.

Good luck with it.

Just stabilize. For the $8 and 30 seconds of time it will cost you, it's a non-question.

Winter prep routine:

1) Go for one last ride, need not be long (10 minutes). Put stabilizer in first to make sure it gets into the carbs.

2) If you're going for a longer ride, bring the stabilizer with you and fill up + add stabilizer just before you get home.

3) While the bike is still warm, change the oil and lube the chain.

4) Put bike in its storage location and attach your Batter Tender or equivalent.

5) If you have paddock stands, put the bike up on them. If not, don't worry about it.

6) If you park outdoors or in a shed where vermin can get in, cover your exhaust pipes so you don't wind up with mice in there.

7) Walk away until spring. Do not start the bike up in mid-winter unless you're prepared to get it fully warm (and thereby get rid of any condensation).

In spring, the bike will fire right up every time. Check your tires and go.

You don't need high octane fuel for storage, but if that's all you can get without ethanol it would be the best choice. Gas without ethanol still goes bad from sitting, just not as quickly.

As adouglas noted, add the stabilizer and ride a bit to make sure the stabilized fuel gets into the injectors since your bike is F.I.

Changing the oil and filter before storing is better than after.

Do any maintenance now so you can just hop on and go (after checking the oil , tire pressure, etc) when it's riding weather again.

Never start the bike up during storage to "warm it up". It only contaminates your clean oil with water, acids, and unburned fuel.

Doing something to keep the battery from going flat is a good idea also.
