Been reading through the jetting threads and you guys got me thinking .
Since the air box is difficult to deal with while removing the carburetor, thinking about rejetting while I got the carburetor out, removing the airbox & installing K & N pod air filters . Can remove the airbox when I change the rear tire next week. Don't want to mess with the exhaust, yet. Been looking at this thread: http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=11178 Is there common jet sizes used in this group when removing the air box only? Can order different sizes to experiment with from Jets-R-Us so I will only pay shipping once. This is "all" the Ninja modifications I want to do right now. Got to finish my 80 Honda CX500D Street Tracker project, first. Showed my wife Street Fighters on line, and she likes them. Guess I will not keep the Ninja stock afterall and when I finish the Honda Street Tracker project, will build a Ninja 250 Street Fighter . Street Tracker Project: |

Bill,
Exactly how much riding experience does your wife have? Removing the airbox does give the bike the ability to pull harder in the top end, but sacrifices some low end power, that to me, would make the bike more user unfriendly. plus, the pregens seem to be more difficult to jet, compared to the newgens, once you remove the airbox. http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Rejetti...ng_pod_filters remove the main and pilot jets, blow them out with compressed air and visually inspect the jet centers for unobstructed center holes. http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=65198 blow out the carb passages with compressed air as well. with the carb passages, try to blow the compressed air in the opposite direction that the gas flows through the passages. remove the top of the carbs to shim the needles. read the DIY on shimming carb needles. Careful when you handle the slide diaphragms inside the carbs... they are about $100 each. I have added 2ea, 3mm shims to a stock pregen before with excellent results.... no other jetting changes. what pilot and main jet sizes are in there now? http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/How_to_...e_your_jetting |

Also sounds like if the pre-gens are more difficult to re-jet, makes my mind up to keep the carburetor/air box stock. It's got 38/105 jets in it. Appreciate the tips/advice & links. Will be riding tomorrow and back working on the Ninja project Saturday. Will post progress. Thanks, |

yes, removing the airbox does make it not as beginner user friendly, IMHO.
shim the needles and your wife will love you for it. combined with the tire change, which should lower the bike a bit plus make it way stickier than what's on the there now, will make her very happy with the bike, I'm sure. You know the saying... happy wife, happy home. |

If by, "Street Fighter" you mean taking all the plastics off, I suggest you hang on to them because the lack of plastic will drop your resale price by about $800 should you ever decide to sell and get a bigger Ninja.

Cleaned the jets and found one main jet with partial blockage. Cleaned out with shop air. Also found one of the float needle retainer/clips with the needle "not" retained by the clip. Corrected this. PO had MC shop to clean carb where this probably happened. The float needle tapered tips look good. Will look this afternoon for needle shims. Edit: Could not find 3MM washers locally this afternoon. Found some #4 stainless washers at Lowes. The stackup for two #4 washers are 1/16" combined. Not sure how thick 3MM washers are. Will give the #4 washers a try. The following photos were taken today before the first "real" test ride. Installed the set of Pirelli tires and put the bike back together. Got it inspected, insured, and new tags today.
Found the closest twistys and had loads of fun on the Ninja before dark. Sweet Bike! Ran it up to 12,000 RPM and it pulls strong without any issues. Will take it to the mountains tomorrow in search for more twistys. My wife is learning to ride, so I am getting the bike ready for her! |

It worked out removing the old failed tank liner and relining the fuel tank with POR 15 & installing inline fuel filter. Was not a POR 15 liner that failed.
The modified air/battery box is working well, too. Should be easy to remove the carburetor next time. http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=74317 Only thing left to replace will be fork seals & oil. The seals were leaking on the last mountain ride, got them on order today. Sanded the exhaust system and painted with 2000F primer & flat black paint. Will start additional modifications to the Ninja this winter! Really enjoy riding the Ninja in the mountains! |

Make sure you test those twisties really good. A few thousand miles of them should be enough. You wouldn't want the wife to complain about them not being fun enough.

Told my wife I will be sure there are no problems with "her" bike. Of course will have to go on another all day twisty ride to test the new fork seals & oil!!! |

let me know... I'm sure we can continue to find "safety" issues that need to be addressed before the bike is deemed safe enough for the wife.
