Continuing arm problems mean more surgery for Pedrosa after Jerez MotoGP
The physiological saga of Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa after his injury at last year’s Motegi GP continuesAfter suffering from continuing problems with his left arm during the Qatar MotoGP race, Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa underwent further medical tests to determine the cause. The Spaniard complained of numbness and lack of strength towards the latter half of the Qatar race, symptoms that plagued him during the last two races of the 2010 season after surgery to repair the fractured collarbone suffered from his crash during practice for the Motegi GP last October. This reportedly forced Pedrosa to slow his pace at Qatar, allowing race winner Casey Stoner to pull away and second place finisher Jorge Lorenzo to catch and pass him as well. After undergoing extensive testing with a vascular surgeon, it was determined that Pedrosa will need to undergo surgery after this weekend’s Jerez MotoGP event, possibly complicating his run for the championship this year. Back in November, Pedrosa went through a two-day battery of tests (CAT scan, an MRI scan, electromyography and Eco-Doppler tests) at the Dexeus Univertity Institute Hospital in Barcelona, under the supervision of Dr. Xavier Mir, the facility’s respected chief orthopedic surgeon who has treated many other MotoGP riders. At that time, it was determined that Pedrosa’s symptoms were caused by trauma to the brachial plexus nerve, the bundle of nerves routed closely to the collarbone that controls arm/hand function and strength (because of the nerves’ close proximity to the collarbone, fractures in that area can result in accompanying trauma to the fragile nerve tissue; unlike injuries to the spinal nerve tissue, peripheral nerves such as the brachial plexus can regenerate cells and heal). The recommendation was simply rest, physiotherapy, and anti-inflammatory treatment.
