So my idea is...

So we all know the seats on the Ninja isn't exactly posturepedic certified when you're riding long distances, for this reason I racked my brain and did some research.

I found the Luimoto gold gel inserts, for this design you pull the upholstery fabric from your stock seat to expose the formed mold. From there you cut down in where your posterior sits and replace with the Luimoto gel. It is supposed to allow support without bottoming out and absorbs shock from any rougher terrain you hit in the road.





Also, ultimately gives me an excuse to re-upholster my seat with some different fabric....something UNIQUE

Anyone have any experience with the Luimoto gel?

I would like to do this to my seat, but man $70 for a piece of gel? I would rather send my seat off to that guy on the net that does all this for your about $75 total.

Well upon my investigating what I was finding was a lot of the gels reviews claim they "bottom out", Luimoto reviews are pretty nice and what they boast is the fact their gel won't bottom out but rather cushion and absorb. Nothing i'm jumping into but wanted some opinions, maybe someone on the forum will have used this brand before

Ba ha ha, good one. :P I want a comfy seat, we do a lot of extended riding here and a 4+ hr straight ride can make you feel ill in the rear.

Buttttttttttt while we're on the topic I've been known to give fantastic massages and my 250 was the test bike used for the Area P High Mount exhaust. It's a match made in heaven! Plus, you're doing to need that massage after riding all of the way to California

I'm a pretty darn handy and crafty person,
i'm sure I can and will do just fine.

At this point it's just narrowing down which gel is best for it, which fabric I want to reupholster with..stuff like that.

Any seat will fade here if left in the sun sadly, but I keep my sexy lady covered when she isn't being rode.

Two options to consider if you really want to fix it for hours of pain free, comfortable riding.

One, Renazco Racing. I did this, they worked total magic with the stock seat. I could ride full days for days on end, no problem. Downside? Expensive, takes a loooong time as they are probably at lest 3 months booked already.

Two, Seat Concepts had agreed to mod a seat for me months ago. I decided to wait for option 1 as they have built a dozen awesome seats for me already. I'd trust these guys too.

I'm thinking of doing the Luimoto gel too. I refuse to pay $300 for a seat, I don't care how comfortable it is. And, honestly, it doesn't look that hard to install at all.

Ya, same here...I feel it is a nice alternative to the $300+ dollar seat replacements.

if you're worried about cracking and fading, marine grade vinyl will work great.
costs a little more, but it withstands both uv and heat.

I see a few potential issues here...

You'll need to seal the perimeter of the gel pad to the foam or you risk water buildup under/around the gel. That can cause mildew (stink) and that horrible squishy sound you get when your shoes are wet.

Depending on the gels thickness in comparison to the seat foam, you may have a difficult time removing the proper depth of material from the seat evenly (cutting up foam sounds easy but it's a PITA.)

I would either recommend an upholstery shop to do the install or go with an aftermarket seat.

Sometimes the cheaper route isn't a better route.

I just really enjoy putting time and effort and being like, "WOW, I did that"
No, it's not something I would finish in a hour but with enough effort and patience I do feel it could be pretty epic.

It's not mainly about the money to me, just like doing stuff myself.

I have the Luimoto gel, its easy to install and much better than stock maybe not as good as say a Corbin seat or any of the others but its a huge improvement over stock! I just reused my original seat cover, carefully take out the staples and trim the gel to fit, cut out and trim down the foam to make the gel fit even and your done, I think its a great product for the low price.

If you watch the install video from Luimoto, its literally as easy as following along and doing the steps in the same order as they do, does it take time to get the gel to sit evenly? yes it does but no more than 5-10 mins of careful trimming and adjusting and no worries about the gel being loose it has a very strong adhesive back on it that sticks down and the smoothing material they supply really compresses everything into place. I will throw up a pic of my seat I do not have any of the actual install but its exactly like their video. I also bought the exact stuff they suggest for making it an easy install only thing I missed was a hand stapler was not strong enough for my seat pan and I had to go and buy a $25 air upholstery stapler not a big deal.

You can see in the second pic there is a slight bump near the very edge of the seat where the gel insert is just visible, I didnt take as much time as I should have and left the gel cut a bit wide its barely visible and you can not feel it while riding at all.

You could go on Becky's website Custom Seat Creation who is a member here and get a custom seat cover made at the same time you're redoing your seat. It would create a whole new seat which would look awesome and unique.
