[motorcycle.com] - LiveWire S2 Del Mar LE to Debut May 10

LiveWire announced it will reveal its next electric motorcycle on May 10. Dubbed the S2 Del Mar LE, the new model will be powered by a new modular Arrow EV architecture and slot in under the LiveWire One as a new middleweight-level model.

The announcement was accompanied by a brief video released on social media channels that shows some flat track racing footage and the tag line “The Next Victory Lap.” The footage appears to be of Harley-Davidson factory rider Scott Parker racing at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Oct. 11, 1998, for his fifth straight national championship.

The video also offers a brief, but distorted look at the S2 Del Mar LE, showing the rear of the bike from its left side.

LiveWire previously confirmed the S2 Del Mar would use the new Arrow architecture, which combines the motor, battery, inverter and on-board charger into a single unit. The Arrow EV system would be scalable to suit a range of configurations and performance levels. The S2 indicates middleweight-level applications, which will eventually be followed by lightweight S3 models and heavyweight S4 models.

The clues point to a model resembling an illustration of a future middleweight model Harley-Davidson released back in 2019 (pictured at top) that bears some flat track influences. The teaser shows a tail and a tire-hugging plate holder mounted to the swingarm that resemble the illustration. Both the drawing and the photo of the Arrow architecture show a swingarm with a boomerang-shaped right side to connect to the rear shock. Look closer at the Arrow image and you can see the left side of the swingarm is a straight rectangular unit that resembles what we see in the teaser video.

We don’t yet know any specifications for the motor or the battery. A small label on the battery casing appears to read “Revelation 700”, which may suggest performance similar to a 700cc gas-powered motorcycle. We also don’t know how much the S2 Del Mar LE will cost, but we can assume pricing to come in much lower than the LiveWire One’s $21,999 MSRP.

The “LE” in the name should signify a limited edition model, and the Del Mar page on LiveWire’s official website suggests it will be a run of just 100 motorcycles. This may be for just the first model year, however, and we expect a broader release for 2023 and beyond. Interestingly, the meta data for the landing page suggests the launch was initially supposed to take place in April, and that the Del Mar LE will be offered in two colors. The full page description reads: “the all-new LiveWire Delmar, releasing in mid-April. Sign up today and be one of the first to reserve this limited release edition. With two colors to select from, be the first few to stand out from the rest.”

We’ll find out more details when LiveWire launches the S2 Del Mar LE on May 10.

UPDATE: A second teaser video was uploaded May 9, the day before the official launch. The new footage offers few glimpses of the Del Mar including a look at an S2 (for “System 2”) Arrow label. We can also spy high handlebars and round indicators that resemble the concept drawing, plus a circular instrument nacelle. There’s also a look at the LW logo against a black background. Since LiveWire is now its own entity separate from Harley-Davidson, it’s possible the Del Mar won’t come in the orange color scheme shown in the drawing. The video’s description seems to confirm that 100 units will be available for reservation as of tomorrow.
